1. Only the fifth-placed team in the league qualifies for the UEFA Cup automatically. The other two places in the UEFA Cup are awarded to the teams who win the FA and Carling Cups. If the winner of the FA Cup has already qualified for either the Champions League or the UEFA Cup by virtue of the league, their place in the UEFA Cup is awarded to the other finalist. If the runner-up has also qualified for Europe via the league, then the UEFA Cup place reverts to the league. In the League Cup, if the winner has already qualified for Europe via the league, their place reverts to the league too, rather than to the other finalist.
The highest-placed team who applies for the Intertoto Cup and does not finish in an automatic UEFA Cup spot will be awarded with a place in the Intertoto Cup. A further place in the UEFA Cup is up for grabs via the Premiership Fair Play League. The winner is placed into a draw with the winners of Fair Play leagues in other countries. The representatives from the two countries that come out of the hat first are given a place in the UEFA Cup First Qualifying Round. If the team who finishes top of the Premiership Fair Play League has already qualified for Europe via the league, their place in the draw will be awarded to the next highest placed team in the Fair Play League who hasn't qualified for Europe.
For further information on European qualification see Premier League - Competition.
