English: Portrait of the Princess Queen (Kromluang) Yothathep. She was the only child of King Narai of Siam. King Narai fell gravely ill in March 1688 while in his Lopburi palace. In May 1688, he called his closest councilors: Phaulkon, Phra Phetracha, and Phra Pi, and nominated his daughter, Princess Yothathep, to succeed him. The three councilors were to act as regents until the princess took on a partner of her choice from one of the two Siamese councilors. Engraving by French artist François Jollain (also spelled Iollain). Note: her birthname is Sudawadi. Kromluang is a high-ranking royal title in Thailand. |
