Draft:Hershael York

  • Comment: Well done on creating the draft, and it may potentially meet the relevant requirements (including WP:GNG, WP:ANYBIO) but presently it is not clear that it does.
As other reviewers have noted, Wikipedia's basic requirement for entry is that the subject is notable. Essentially subjects are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject. To properly create such a draft page, please see the articles ‘Your First Article’, ‘Referencing for Beginners’ and ‘Easier Referencing for Beginners’. In short, "notability" requires reliable sources about the subject, rather than by the subject.
The image used likely breaches copyright, which Wikipedia takes seriously, so should be removed unless clear evidence of its legal use is provided. If it is indeed the draft's author's "Own work" then the author (@Ssarella) clearly knows the subject and has a conflict of interest that must be declared (see details below). It seems highly unlikely that it is the draft's author's "Own work", unless the author is also a professional photographer, but no such evidence has been provided.
Please note that many of the references would appear to be from sources that are NOT considered reliable for establishing notability and should be removed (including blogs, company websites, press releases, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Spotify etc).
Additionally, the draft tends to read too much like a promotional CV, which Wikipedia is not; and contains prose that is not of a standard appropriate for an encyclopaedia (also see WP:PEACOCK).
Also, if you have any connection to the subject, including being the subject (see WP:AUTOBIO) or being paid, you have a conflict of interest that you must declare on your Talk page (to see instructions on how to do this please click the link).
Please familiarise yourself with these pages before amending the draft. If you feel you can meet these requirements, then please make the necessary amendments before resubmitting the page.
It would help our volunteer reviewers by identifying, on the draft's talk page, the WP:THREE best sources that establish notability of the subject.
It would also be helpful if you could please identify with specificity, exactly which criteria you believe the page meets (eg "I think the page now meets WP:ANYBIO criteria #3, because XXXXX").
Once you have implemented these suggestions, you may also wish to leave a note for me on my talk page, including the name of the draft page, and I would be happy to reassess. Cabrils (talk) 04:03, 15 October 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment: Can you point out the WP:THREE for notability? I see a lot of commentary and non-independent sources but nothing that talks about him in-depth. Being a Dean does not automatically qualify him as an WP:NACADEMIC. CNMall41 (talk) 06:20, 26 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment: This draft was resubmitted with no improvement or attempts to fix the issues raised, that this draft does not have enough reliable sources. Please do not resubmit a draft without addressing these issues. Drafts that are constantly resubmitted with no improvement may be nominated for deletion. SK2242 (talk) 22:01, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
  • Comment: The article has too many references to non-independent sources (like websites associated with the subject or articles written by him). BuySomeApples (talk) 23:23, 10 January 2025 (UTC)

OccupationBaptist theologian and minister

Hershael W. York (born March 4, 1960) is an American Baptist theologian, minister, and academic administrator. He has served as the Dean of the School of Theology and the Victor and Louise Lester Professor of Christian Preaching at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary since August 2018.[1]

Early life and education

York was born in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. He studied at Michigan State University before transferring to the University of Kentucky, where he earned a B.A. and M.A. in Classical Languages.[1] He later attended Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Memphis, Tennessee, earning both a Master of Divinity and Ph.D. in New Testament and Greek.[2][3] He received his doctorate in Greek and New Testament in 1993 by writing a dissertation on the First Epistle of John.[4][5]

Ministry and academic career

From 1988 to 1990, York was pastor of First Baptist Church in Marion, Arkansas.[6] He then served as Senior Pastor of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky, from 1990 to 1997.[7] In 1997, he joined the faculty of Southern Seminary as Associate Professor of Preaching. In 1999, he was appointed the Victor and Louise Lester Professor of Christian Preaching.[1][8]

York was elected Kentucky Baptist Convention president in 2004. He advocated for conservatism and made attempts to restore a friendly relationship between the Kentucky Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.[9]

York was named as the 11th Dean of The School of Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary effective August 1, 2018.[10]

In 2003, York became Senior Pastor of Buck Run Baptist Church in Frankfort, Kentucky. During his tenure, the church relocated to a new 100-acre campus. He retired on January 28, 2024, and was named Pastor Emeritus.[11][12]

Other activities

York is the host of the Pastor Well podcast and a frequent speaker at preaching conferences.[2]

Personal life

York has been married to Tanya York since 1981, and they have two children.[1][13] She received the Women in Christian Leadership Award at the Kentucky Baptist Convention’s Annual Meeting in 2024.[14] Hershael and Tanya help couples through Marriage retreats and seminars.[15]

Views

York is a conservative evangelical who believes in the inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible.[16] He was involved in the conservative resurgence of the Kentucky Baptist Convention. He has been an advocate against abortion, arguing for the sacredness and dignity of human life.[17] He made a decision to leave twitter on June 4, 2024 as twitter changed its policy allowing sexual content on the platform.[18] Hershael spoke against the executive order of Andy Beshear banning the so-called conversion therapy, stating that God created humans as gendered people.[19]
