Background
Tulsi Pujan Diwas is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in parts of India on December 25 and is dedicated to worshipping the tulsi plant.[1][2][3] In Hinduism, the tulsi plant is believed to bring prosperity and positive energy to households and symbolizes devotion, purity, and spirituality.[2][4][5]
The festival was established in 2014 by the Indian spiritual leader Asaram Bapu.[2][3] Because of its date, the holiday offers an alternative to Christmas for those who practice Hinduism.[3] The festival is associated with the deities Krishna and Vishnu.[2][5]

Observance
Tulsi Pujan Diwas begins with bathing and dressing in clean clothes.[6] Devotees then perform rituals that include prasada or offerings of flowers, rice, sandlewood paste, sindoor, sweets, and water to the tulsi plant.[4][6] The celebration typically involves lighting a diya to honor the sacredness of the tulsi plant.[5] In addition, tulsi plants are adorned with garlands of flowers and a red hunri or scarf.[2][6] To purify the mind and soul, festival participants circle the tulsi plant seven times while chanting prayers and mantras.[2][7]
Part of the observance of Tulsi Pujan Diwas includes donating tulsi plants to temples or planting new saplings at the homes of participants.[2][5] People also donate red clothing, warm clothing, rice, and money on Tulsi Pujan Diwas.[7]
