I'm researching a USAAF B-24D crash report dated 27/28 July, 1943, concerning a bombing attack upon Tarawa, 800 miles NNW. The group of B-24s departed and otherwise returned to "FUNA FUTI", so their active landing strip with maintenance facilities had obviously been in existence prior. This seems to contradict this current information that indicates the Seabees didn't arrive to build the heavy bomber facility until after this/these missions were already being flown!
