Reorganize the article for a better lede.

Currently, the article as currently written gives a terrible first impression, in that it at first blush, appears more a "Let's celebrate the patriarchy"/"Toxic Masculinity Day" rather than a day of awareness signifying the actual real life issues faced by males around the world. The first few paragraphs completely bury the point and even introduce jargon that cannot be addressed until someone has already decided or not to read the main body of the article.

Here, try this: International Men's Day, is an awareness day for many issues that men face, including abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence. Just one sentence alone helps bring the lede back in line with what the awareness is for, instead introducing six principles when the table of contents isn't even visible yet. 2601:540:8200:187:8062:862:DBF8:F3DB (talk) 08:55, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I tried addressing this. Schwarbage (talk) 09:21, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I also tried addressing the terrible criticism page, which contained sources that were entirely opinion pages from individual people, not a notable consensus. Many of them are also not considered reliable sources (Huff Post opinion, Metro, Jezebel, etc) Schwarbage (talk) 09:30, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism

@Schwarbage, I had added the Criticism section because of how prominent it is in media; unlike any other politicized identity holiday.Yuyutsu Ho (talk) 07:49, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Prominent in opinion rags + blogs by online journalists of little renown, which ended up being sourced. Most coverage generally leans more towards neutrality in regard to the event. You could add a lot of Criticism sections in articles that normally wouldn't receive them due to how easy it is to get business online by harvesting angry clicks. Please note the growing allayment of the Men's Day concept with white supremacy groups that reinforce misogyny and incite violence against women. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.0.180.160 (talk) 01:28, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a reliable and, above all, neutral source to support this false claim? JacktheBrown (talk) 18:09, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This unjustified hatred towards men must stop, I would like a world in peace and harmony (before anyone falsely accuses me of being a misogynist, I love all women). JacktheBrown (talk) 19:49, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
totally agree. it's widely criticized because it tries to shift the focus from women's issues. it's a misogynist dog-whistle. the article should reflect that. 176.54.86.53 (talk) 08:50, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So having an international day dedicated to men's issues shifts the focus away from women's issues? Dear IP, human beings aren't only composed of women, and to try, as you're doing, to shift the focus to women's day even in the article dedicated to men's day, is a despicable act on your part. Furthermore, International Men's Day is celebrated much less than it should be (in Europe it's never celebrated). JacktheBrown (talk) 19:10, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"It's widely criticized..." [citation needed] JacktheBrown (talk) 19:20, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This Wikipedia article is indeed showing that "International Men's Day" exists and it is clearly showing why people believe this day is necessary, in the same way the International Women's Day article is showing that the day exists and why people believe that day is necessary, as well as any historical events that led to that day being chosen. There's no such thing as "one day exists so that attention is taken away from the other gender". There are people like me who believe that "both days should exist", each for their own reasons; neither of them is unnecessary.
Anyway, this claim that "the day is meant to take away attention from women's issues" is not a statement that can be properly sourced and that is why I suggest we do not include such writing in this article. This sentence is not even a neutral sentence, in my opinion and it is weird that anybody would suggest including that here. I suggest we do not guess why the people who created "International Men's Day" did it (we act on available information), but I am very sure that it is about indicating that even men have issues that need attention, such as suicide rates. As we can see in the Lists of holidays article, almost anything we can think of has got a day on the calendar and this one existing should actually not bother anybody. So, this claim by the last IP cannot be written in the article, sorry. GeographicAccountant (talk) 19:51, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@GeographicAccountant: a very big +1, your comment is perfect. JacktheBrown (talk) 20:19, 8 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Poland

Poland is listed as one of the countries here, but we don't celebrate it neither in November nor in a way even remotely related to the six pillars or tbh anything like IMD. We do actually celebrate boy's day PL:Dzień_chłopka, but it's limited to school age boys and happens in September. For past several years some people have been pushing for man's day on March 10th, but there are no actual celebrations, nothing related to the six pillars again, more like a cash grab, just low effort "Women had their big celebrations on 8th, so now let's say it's your turn, here's a discount code for chips and beer" kinda thing.

So tl;dr it should probably be deleted. 5.173.241.79 (talk) 14:29, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Has "Poland" done anything "in the past" to acknowledge IMD? I'm asking because I know "South Africa" has had acknowledgement before, which is why they are indicated, although they haven't done anything in the last dozen years. GeographicAccountant (talk) 09:36, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Poland has now been removed. GeographicAccountant (talk) 12:45, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
