I am surprised that there is no mention here of the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana or the Rural Electricity Infrastructure and Household Electrification Scheme, which was initiated in 2005 by the Singh administration and extended by the subsequent Modi administration.

I admit it is hard to source information on this in English. The topic seems to fly under the radar, notwithstanding the obvious importance of this reform.

India's GDP growth would certainly not have been quite so impressive over the past decade if electrification was still patchy across the country. Inchiquin (talk) 03:26, 30 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

"Studies suggest that urban economic growth has become less pro-poor since the 1991 economic reforms." The source for this statement is from 2011. It would not have accounted for the significant poverty alleviation/urbanization schemes from the period 2009-2019. Urban poverty and rural poverty have both decreased since 2011 and 1991.

Hi Dimness

Unquestionably, the decline in urban and rural poverty across India has much to do with rapid increase in household electrification since the 1990s, especially in rural areas. Electrification is associated with higher rates of literacy and improved health and quality of life, and ultimately helps to level the playing field between the privileged and those less so advantaged in society.
