Summary

Description
English: On January 21, 2009, Barack Obama underwent a second oath of office due to a technical error that occurred during his initial swearing-in ceremony on January 20, 2009. During the first inauguration, Chief Justice John Roberts misstated parts of the oath, which, combined with a slight pause, led to confusion in the sequence of words. To affirm the legality and formality of the presidential oath as mandated by the Constitution, and to preempt any potential legal challenges concerning the legitimacy of Obama's presidency based on the accuracy of the oath's administration, a decision was made to hold a second, private ceremony where the oath could be administered correctly. The second ceremony occurred in the Map Room of the White House. Present were Chief Justice John Roberts, who correctly administered the oath, First Lady Michelle Obama, and a select few White House staff members, including the White House counsel. This event was also documented by a White House photographer for official records.
