The following is a list of events affecting American television in 2017. 1 Hearst Television stations in 26 markets are removed from DirecTV due to the companies failing to reach a new retransmission contract.[1]
2–13 Former Today anchors Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira rejoin Matt Lauer on the Today anchor desk, with Couric appearing the week of January 2nd and Viera week of January 9th. The appearances are to help fete Lauer's 20th anniversary on the NBC morning news/talk show, to help fill the void left by current co-anchor Savannah Guthrie's maternity leave, and to mark Today's 65th anniversary.[2]
3 NBC News announces the hiring of Megyn Kelly from Fox News, where she was host of The Kelly File. At NBC, she will host a daytime news and discussion program and a Sunday newsmagazine, and is figured to play a prominent role in political and major news coverage.[3]

16 PBS will expand their PBS Kids programming franchise by launching a 24-hour PBS Kids Channel on digital subchannels of some of its member stations and/or state networks, and will also be streamed on the PBS Kids app, and on streaming devices. This will be the service’s second attempt in offering a kids programming channel, the first being a cable-only channel funded by DirecTV from 1999 to 2005. [5] [6]
18 The 43rd People's Choice Awards will air on CBS, with Joel McHale as host.[7]

Approximately 20 employees will be affected by NWCN's closure, with Tegna seeking to offer them positions at other Tegna stations.[88]
