Greek is a teen drama television series that runs on the ABC Family network. The show follows the story of Rusty, a college freshman attending the fictional Cyprus-Rhodes University, who longs to leave behind his reputation as a high school geek. He wishes to join a fraternity, but his sister Casey does not want him to interfere with her current enjoyment of Greek life.

Most of the characters belong to either the fictional fraternities Kappa Tau Gamma (ΚΤΓ) and Omega Chi Delta (ΩΧΔ), or the fictional sororities Zeta Beta Zeta (ΖΒΖ) and Pi Pi Pi (ΠΠΠ)

The show first premiered on July 9, 2007

Name of the show

The Greek letter "Sigma" is not the equivalent of the English/Latin letter "E."

ABC advertises the name of the show with the Greek letter Sigma to spell the title GRΣΣK (since Sigma resembles an E in the English alphabet) instead of Epsilon, which is much the same in appearance and function as E. Taken literally, the name of the show is actually GRSSK, since Sigma is the Greek letter equivalent of the English S. The name of the show would have to be spelled either GREEK or ΓΡEEK to be correct in English or Greek, respectively.

Episode Guide

Cast

Originally from Chicago, Rusty attends college in an attempt to leave behind his geeky image, one that he achieved in high school but cannot shed since declaring Polymer science as his major. He wishes to pledge a fraternity, but his sister, Casey, tries to convince him otherwise. After pledging Kappa Tau Gamma, Casey has a change of heart and accepts Rusty's place within the Greek system. Nicknamed "Spitter" after spitting out tequila after his first taste.

Older sister, Casey is vying to be the next president of the Zeta Beta Zeta sorority. She is dating Evan Chambers, a member of the brother fraternity, Omega Chi Delta, who also nominated her as the "Omega Chi Sweetheart." She was also noted to have once dated Cappie, a relationship that he would like to renew.

His Big Brother, Cappie, befriends Rusty during rush and convinces him to pledge Kappa Tau. It is noted that he and Casey once had a relationship, one that he would like to renew but cannot since she is dating Evan. Although appearing as a lazy party-goer, he uses his intelligence and wit to deliver the line, "I used to be a _______ Major" after reciting knowledge on any subject matter. Nicknamed "Cappie" possibly because of being the Kappa Tau president, but his real name remains unrevealed.

Her boyfriend, Evan, is the current president of Omega Chi Delta, the brother fraternity to Zeta Beta Zeta. He futhered his relationship with Casey by offering Casey his letters in a lavaliering ceremony and nominating her for "Omega Chi Sweetheart." He also bonded with Little Brother, Calvin, during a campus-wide blackout while attempting to kill a retched rat.

His friend, Calvin, is a closeted gay who pledges Omega Chi Delta as a legacy. He was in a short-lived relationship with Heath from Kappa Tau Gamma after the two had a sexual encounter during rush. He also used his knowledge of hockey to help Rusty during a floor hockey tournament while pledging. He also bonded with Big Brother, Evan, during a campus-wide blackout while attempting to kill a retched rat.

His roommate, Dale is the moralistic nerd representing the South, who voices disagreement with Rusty's "new" lifestyle, even to go as far as to hack the school's system and shut down Rusty's electricity supply as a sign of hatred. He is a member of a faith sharing group, a volunteer at a local children's shelter, and -- surprisingly -- the lead guitarist in the fictional band, Darwin Lied. He also used his knowledge of Physics to assist Rusty during a floor hockey tournament while pledging.

Her best friend, Ashleigh, is a kindhearted girl who supports best friend, Casey, in her endeavor to become the president of Zeta Beta Zeta. She has a long-distance boyfriend named Travis, and even remains faithful to him, despite the other girls suggesting she leave him after they find him rude and appalling. She is often seen leaning on the shoulder of Calvin, who usually delivers her some sound advice.

Her Little Sister, Rebecca is the Senator's daughter who was the major target in rush. Casey bribes her to pledge Zeta Beta Zeta, and she accepts. First appearing as friends, their relationship deteriorates when Casey discovers her one night stand with Evan. She is also the only one to know Cappie's real name after conducting a psychological case study on him, one that required that he fill out a form.

Her Big Sister, Frannie, is the current president of the Zeta Beta Zeta sorority. She usually doesn't think about what anyone else wants, only whats best for the sorority. After a meeting with her advisor, it was found out that she did not meet all the requirements for her to graduate on-time as a Pre-med student, and that she would have to attend college for a fifth year. Thus beginning her track to run for Zeta Beta president for the second time.

His girlfriend, Jen pledged Zeta Beta Zeta as a legacy, and is the uncoordinated, naive, and ditzy girl who eventually earned the affections of Rusty. She sometimes states that her roommate, Stephanie, is an agoraphobe who likes to stay in their room and play with her webcam. She even referred to it as living with lonelygirl15.

A schoolmate, Heath, is a member of Kappa Tau Gamma who befriended Calvin during rush. A closeted gay, the two had a short-lived relationship that ended because he cheated on Calvin.

His frat brothers, Beaver, is a member of Kappa Tau Gamma, often appearing with other brothers. His one gag is that whenever he gets drunk, he has a subconscious motive to pee in Cappie's closet.

Trivia

  • In the episodes "The Rusty Nail" and "Friday Night Frights", the band Plain White T's was featured as musical entertainment for two individual parties hosted by Kappa Tau Gamma. The first time, the group played the famous Hey There, Delilah. The second time, the group played the uncoming single Our Time Now.
  • In the episode "The Rusty Nail", Casey suggests she and Evan watch an episode of Frasier. Kelsey Grammer, the star of Frasier, is the real-life father of Spencer Grammer (Casey).
  • In the episode "Multiple Choices", the band the Dollyrots was featured as musical entertainment at a party hosted by Omega Chi Delta. They played their hit Because I'm Awesome.
  • In the episode "Multiple Choices", the college prepares for the week of midterm examinations, and Cappie helps his frat brothers with "study aids" organized in multiple filing cabinets. When Rusty fears he will flunk his Honors Physics exam, Cappie reveals that there are zero aids under "Sciences" but pulls out a skull and recites a motivational speech that parodied the a monologue from Hamlet.
  • In the episode "Depth Perception," after a meeting with her advisor, Frannie discovers that she will not be able to graduate on-time as a Pre-med student and will have to stay for a fifth year to fulfill all of her requirements. She even goes on to say, "You mean I won't become an Izzie or Meredith?", a reference to Grey's Anatomy.
  • In the episode "Depth Perception," Jen K mentions her roommate, Stephanie, an agoraphobe who spends much of her time in front of a webcam. Jen describes it as "living with lonelygirl15." Coincidently, Jessica Rose, who plays Jen K, played the role of lonelygirl15 in the internet program of the same name.
  • In the episode "Depth Perception", Cappie participated in a psychological case study conducted by Rebecca. His case study number for Cappie was 8675309, the same seven digits used in Tommy Tutone's famous song "Jenny 8675309."

Controversy

  • The show has attracted some negative attention from some members of Greek organizations who claim that the show stereotypes members.[1]
