Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel[4] (French pronunciation: [nɔtʁə dam dy mɔ̃ kaʁmɛl]) is a parish municipality in the Mauricie region of the province of Quebec in Canada.

History

Settlement began in the early 1850s. The parish was established in 1858 and the following year, the Parish Municipality of Notre Dame du Mont Carmel (orthography adjusted in 1969 to include hyphens) was formed out of territory ceded by the parish municipalities of Saint Maurice and Cap de La Magdeleine.[5] It was named after Mount Carmel in Israel due to its resemblance in topography. In 1866, the post office opened, originally called Valmont.[1]

Until December 31, 2001, the municipality was part of Le Centre-de-la-Mauricie Regional County Municipality (which was dissolved on that date), and transferred to Les Chenaux Regional County Municipality.[1]

Demographics

In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel had a population of 6,121 living in 2,558 of its 2,678 total private dwellings, a change of 6.4% from its 2016 population of 5,751. With a land area of 128.29 km2 (49.53 sq mi), it had a population density of 47.7/km2 (123.6/sq mi) in 2021.[3]
