Move
Move to Virginia Beach. No need for Virginia. 2A02:C7E:3AA0:9200:7171:E9D6:A968:BC39 (talk) 16:54, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Requested move 11 January 2024
- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: not moved. Proposed move is clearly in violation of WP:USPLACE. WP:RMCI is very clear that proposals that do not align with guidelines need to be closed as "not moved" regardless of the number of supporters, absent a very good reason to WP:IAR. WP:IAR was invoked here by one supporter, but I do not find the reason provided to be "very good" in this case. (closed by non-admin page mover) Bensci54 (talk) 20:58, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Virginia Beach, Virginia → Virginia Beach – Virginia Beach already redirects to Virginia Beach, Virginia. Per WP:CONCISE. With Virginia being in the city name, this serves the purpose to reduce title redundancy since no other place holds the name. Vataxevader (talk) 20:00, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:USPLACE. You can propose this policy at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (geographic names), but this request will be closed here. glman (talk) 20:08, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose The AP stylebook lists 30 cities that don't need the state alongside, and Virginia Beach isn't one of them. Unless WP:USPLACE is changed, this article should stay. DrOrinScrivello (talk) 22:00, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- Would you mind linking the AP stylebook? I cannot find it anywhere online. Vataxevader (talk) 23:42, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Vataxevader - It is linked at the guideline WP:USPLACE. glman (talk) 23:50, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- I actually don't see a working link there, though the cities are listed in the references. I did find the relevant info here as well. DrOrinScrivello (talk) 00:46, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose per glman and DrOrinScrivello. A 2013 discussion can be consulted at Talk:Virginia Beach, Virginia/Archive 1#Requested move and a more recent request was in 2018 at Talk:Virginia Beach, Virginia/Archive 1#Move Request. A 2008 general discussion on all the city names is at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (settlements)/Archive 19. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 01:26, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- Strong oppose per USPLACE. O.N.R. (talk) 01:38, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- Support, we've done it elsewhere. New York City, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Boston, Atlanta, even internationally with Toronto, London, Auckland. It's no different here. There isn't any other city, nationwide, called "Virginia Beach" per GNIS. I will concede that there are two beaches called Virginia Beach, one in Miami-Dade and one in Nevada (though this one is due to it's location near the historic Virginia City, Nevada). That said, the only city place name is Virginia Beach, Virginia. Thus, we can safely name it Virginia Beach. - Neutralhomer • Talk • 18:05, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- Please review the overarching guideline WP:USPLACE. PEr WP:LOCALCONSENSUS, we cannot make this change on this page. If you want to change the guideline, we need to do it at USPLACE. glman (talk) 19:51, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- I don't need that headache. But if USPLACE is so "overarching" and LOCALCONSENSUS backs it up, then all of the pages I mentioned above (US only) should be renamed accordingly. Can't enforce the rules here and ignore them over there. Just sayin'. I do stand by my !vote, though. - Neutralhomer • Talk • 21:32, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- USPLACE uses the AP stylebook as its guideline, and that manual allows for 30 cities – including the (American) ones you mentioned – to be listed sans state name. Virginia Beach is not included amongst them. There's no conflict of rules enforcement. DrOrinScrivello (talk) 22:42, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

- It might be also noted that, among the 30 U.S. cities listed by the AP, only 28 appear in English Wikipedia as main title header city-only primary topics. The remaining two — Phoenix and Washington — are headers of disambiguation pages. A nomination to move the main header "Phoenix, Arizona" to "Phoenix" was unsuccessful at Talk:Phoenix, Arizona#Requested move 1 February 2023. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 00:48, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Comment Per WP:LOCALCONSENSUS we cannot override WP:USPLACE on this page. This discussion should be a WP:SNOW close and users who support a change can begin a discussion at the overall guideline page. glman (talk) 19:53, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- To the contrary, we can, per IAR, and must first make moves like this per local consensus before changing the guideline. I explained why years ago, here: User:Born2cycle/You_can't_change_the_guideline_first. —В²C ☎ 06:57, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
- Support per nom and applying WP:IAR to USPLACE, which has created untold ambiguity and confusion (like this nom) in title decision-making due to its contradiction of WP:CONCISE. —В²C ☎ 06:57, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:USPLACE, WP:RS, WP:ENGVAR, etc., as elaborated at WP:PERENNIAL. Also, contrary to what the nom seems to suggest, we absolutely cannot assume that the presence of a state in a US place's name indicates the state that it's actually in. Virginia City, for example, is nowhere near Virginia. (Likewise, Minnesota Junction is in Wisconsin, Wisconsin Township is in Minnesota, Nevada City is in California, Arizona Township is in Nebraska, Missouri City is in Texas, Texas is in New York, New York is in Texas, etc.) ╠╣uw [talk] 11:01, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
- Leaning support though I don't think it can be done per WP:USPLACE as that says its common usage though this may be a good idea to ignore it like Colorado Springs though unlike Colorado Springs there are other places, see ceb:Virginia Beach. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:44, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Year Established
I see that the article says that the City of Virginia Beach was established in 1906. That was when it was an incorporated town, not an independent city. These are two different things. I would like to change the year it was established to either 1952, when it became the modern city, or 1963, when it merged with Princess Anne County. I feel that the opening is misleading too vague. I just wanted to ask permission to make this edit, so I won't get yelled at and have my edit reverted. Thanks! Erin (SSBelfastFanatic) (talk) 15:35, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
- It says both very clearly. The lead correctly states that "modern VA Beach" was established in 1906, while the history and infobox share more details. It should not be changed IMO. glman (talk) 16:37, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
- Doesn't modern imply the most recent date? I feel like 1952 would fit best, with something like: "While Virginia Beach was first designated a town in 1906, it became the modern independent city in 1952." Just an idea. Erin (SSBelfastFanatic) (talk) 17:00, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
459,000 or 457,000?
The infobox says 457,000, but later in the article it says 459,470 for the 2020 census population. The infobox number has a source sayings its from the US census bureau, but it looks like the site's dead SSCreader (talk) 18:16, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
