Cork City loan
In February 2022, Coates joined League of Ireland First Division club Cork City on loan.[2]

In August 2022, Coates signed for National League North club Chester.[3] After two seasons with the club, he was released at the end of the 2023–24 season.[4]
On 10 June 2024, Coates joined newly-promoted National League club Boston United.[5] In March 2025, he joined National League North club Hereford on loan until the end of the season.[6] He was released by Boston in May 2025.[7]
On 8 August 2025, Coates joined National League North club AFC Fylde.[8]
