The Grime River (Sungai Grime) is a river in northern New Guinea, in the province of Papua, Indonesia.^[1] It flows through the Grime Valley (Lembah Grime) in Jayapura Regency and empties into the Pacific Ocean.

The Grime River is located in the northern part of New Guinea, within the Grime Valley in Jayapura Regency, Papua. The river flows through a region of lowlands and hills, with the Cyclops Mountains to the north. The Grime Valley covers an area of approximately 900,000 hectares, or about 65% of Jayapura Regency's total area.^[2]

The river is one of two major waterways in the Grime Valley, the other being the Nawa River. The two rivers flow through the districts of Yapsi and Unurum Guay.

The Nimboran languages are spoken in the Grime River watershed.^[3] Several ethnic groups inhabit the river valley, including the Kemtuk, Gresi, Namblong, Uria, Elseng, Aotaba, and Tecuari peoples. These communities live in villages scattered along the Grime River and its tributaries, such as Aib and Aimbe.^[4]

The Grime River valley is an agricultural region. Cocoa is a major crop, with farmers cultivating cocoa plantations along the riverbanks in villages such as Hamonggrang and Kwansu.^[5] In recent years, the region has seen a resurgence in cocoa production following a period of decline.^[6] The local government has identified the Grime Valley as a future food barn for the region.^[7]

The river also supports fishing activities, with local residents fishing using boats.^[8]

In 2026, the Grime River experienced severe drying, attributed to the effects of climate change. Local farmers reported crop failures as a result of the reduced water supply, with some forced to abandon farming and seek alternative livelihoods.^[9] The drying of the river was described as unprecedented in local history.^[10]
