Infoboxes

Can you do {{Infobox television station dual}} as a fork of {{Infobox television station}}? Some stations that could use this are WTTV/WTTK, KDVR/KFCT, KHBS/KHOG, WPBN/WTOM, KOLN/KGIN, etc. Also pinging @Nathan Obral:. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 20:23, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Searching sources for article "KBES"

Hey again! I noticed you took down my Afd for the article KBES, another Assyrian-related article and you mentioned that there were a few references that could be used. Since you know more about editing articles on TV stations, as well as me being a bit busy recently to edit Wikipedia articles on a large scale, I was wondering if you'd be able to work on editing the article with these references.

If you're unable, that's also OK, and I can try to set aside some time to edit the article with references if I can find them. Surayeproject3 (talk) 23:17, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I've made some of the changes you asked to be made, but regarding the point you made about Newspapers.com access: how long does it take usually? I applied the very same day you left the message on my talk page. If you reply here, please ping me. Thanks, TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 22:25, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also, am I allowed to cross off fixes as they are made? TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 22:26, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the notes for the image parameter in the infobox state:
A photo to display, without File:. Does not work in the US. TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 22:37, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • Please do cross off items when they're done, TheTechie. It might take a week or so to get Newspapers.com access approved; it has to be manually done, so it does take time. Also, I just learned that about Infobox road. It's apparently an old local consensus that a map is better than a photo invariably to represent the entirety of a highway. I disagree, but I'm not surprised; that project is the definition of isolated local consensuses, so much so they forked over it. Sammi Brie (she/her • t • c) 06:19, 18 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
      Also, what does this mean?
The lead should mention something of its traffic issues and be a better summary of the article's contents. What might that look like If you reply here, please ping me. Thanks, TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 22:39, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
      • MOS:INTRO: Summarize the article in the lead. I'd combine the two existing lead paragraphs and add a second, something like The mountainous northern portion of the road—included in the state route was built in the late 19th century and regraded several times. Development at the southern terminus in the late 20th century led to extensions, including in 1996, when it subsumed parts of what had been 216th and 219th avenues in a realignment. The road terminated at Tualatin Valley Highway until 2016, when the first of several southern extensions opened.
      Also, what does this mean?
I wonder if a more thematic layout, particularly in re: issues related to safety as the road went from country road to commuter road (some of which are raised by the 2006 refs), would be useful. Another paragraph could be road extensions. This would be better than the proseline-ish presentation now. What kind of thematic layout? TheTechie@enwiki (she/they | talk) 22:41, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I was taking a look myself. But I feel like safety could belong as a paragraph of its own, at least for the mountainous/hilly section. I'm fine with chronological order, but proseline is a problem to be wary of when you write.
    • And this: I would read Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Using maps as sources. You need to be careful to not make original research claims that a map cannot alone provide. Hey there, was thinking there had to be some way to mention how WJXX ended up with the affiliation rather than WBSG, since the whole reason WJXX tanked was because of the need to rush the station to air and make up for WBSG's shortfalls. Hoping to find a way to do it that isn't too detailed ... HangingCurveSwing for the fence 22:49, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate that. The thing about the way that article is set up is that it's supposed to be a summary of basically the WTLV news department and how WJXX came to be. Each of those stations has a much more detailed article on them. To be quite honest, WPXC-TV (the former WBSG) needs attention too. The FCN article is a little unusual for even existing as one of just two joint-newsroom TV articles in the country (the other is Hawaii News Now, and based on this one, Action News Jax may be next). Sammi Brie (she/her • t • c) 05:15, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That was my hunch too. My thoughts were that you really can't tell that story without a brief explanation of how it was originally intended for WBSG to be the ABC affiliate. Gonna try to tweak that article too… HangingCurveSwing for the fence 15:35, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

January 2025 GAN backlog drive

The Barnstar of Diligence
The coordinators of the January 2025 backlog drive wanted to recognize your extra special feat of reviewing articles by different nominators for all 50 of your reviews. That's 50 different people with whom you've interacted in such a helpful and kind way. Congratulations on such a successful January! IntentionallyDense (Contribs) 04:50, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the very kind words, IntentionallyDense. This is what I try to do every backlog drive. There are one or two selfish reasons (I want as many people to see that I have GANs for review as possible), but it forces me out of my rut and to reviewing pages in fields I do not normally touch. By my count, this drive I reviewed pages about topics in or related to 22 countries (not counting Scotland separate from the UK) on every inhabited continent, from Uruguay to the Gambia, Australia to Sweden. (That's more countries than anyone else reviewed pages.) As a nominator, I have found GAN at its most useful sometimes when it forces you to confront how people from outside your area of expertise view your work; this has happened to me in ways that affect every single article improvement project. I don't write about hurricanes, Afrobeats, railways, video games, or cricketers, among other topics, but I can provide ways to strengthen those pages. (And occasionally I find myself cleaning up references to my own field, as at Coachella Valley Firebirds.) It was rewarding to me to find some real issues that would otherwise have gone undetected (the Bach work had an incorrect link, Charles O'Rear assumed he went to the wrong university), to suggest newspaper clipping to more and more users, and to generally help editors improve their craft. Thank you for helping run the backlog drives that make the whole thing work. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 07:39, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I to have found reviwing GAN a great way to branch out. Before I started reviewing I had only ever worked on pages in the scope of WP:MED. I personally think the approach of "someone who has no clue what this is" should take a glance at the page before it makes it to a FA as it helps solve a lot of the common issues of technical issues. Happy editing! IntentionallyDense (Contribs) 18:10, 7 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers.com question

Hello! I'm hoping to mine your Newspapers.com knowledge if you have a moment. I'm working on an article for a NRHP-listed historic district, and in the course of my research on the aforementioned site I discovered the account of one of the people who worked on the district's NRHP nomination form. All of the articles used for researching the nomination have already been clipped and are publicly viewable on her account page. Is there any reason why I can't use the links to her clippings in my citations? I can't imagine there would be, but I wanted to make sure there's no attribution issues, or if those clippings could suddenly become unavailable should she deactivate her account or make the clippings private (I don't even know if that's possible, just trying to consider all possibilities), or even if it's just considered rude, ha. I appreciate any insight you can provide! DrOrinScrivello (talk) 19:41, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@DrOrinScrivello I don't think that should be an issue, especially since once linked here the clippings will almost certainly be archived automatically. (I have a page WSWG that relies nearly entirely on clippings from a newspaper no longer available on the site—and they're all archived!) Also ensure that multi-page items have a clipping for each page. (I recently did a GAN where this was not done and it omitted a fact about the subject.) The only other things to watch for are pagination, especially on newspapers from the 1950s and on, since Newspapers.com does not support for scanned microfilm in almost any case page numbers like 5B or C-2 or sectioned pages, and masthead names for papers that later merged or changed titles, but those are foibles of Newspapers.com data management. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 21:01, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's more or less what I assumed, just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking anything. And those are good tips of things to watch out for; after a break from editing in the historic place topic area it's easy to forget some of Newspapers.com's...quirks. Thanks for your help! I know that you are way better at Newspapers.com searching than I am, so I have a bit of a small request: about 2 weeks ago I updated the page for the Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville restaurant chain to add the date of the original opening in Key West, FL. Turns out the original Margaritaville was originally a souvenir store and only became a restaurant somewhat later in time. The earliest mention I could find of it being a restaurant was in the May 29, 1986 issue of The Naples Daily News. The article is about how, apparently, Buffett did not trademark the usage of "Margaritaville" in the context of restaurants fast enough, and as such a budding restaurateur in San Carlos Park, Florida was allowed to take it first. I searched Florida newspapers as best I could but could not find any mention of it being a restaurant prior to the publication of that article, nor any article about its conversion to a restaurant. Thanks for your help! wizzito | say hello! 15:31, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I spent a lot of time digging this up, @Wizzito. My current research has me narrowing it down to October 1987 to March 1988. SNL 50 and WDIV

Hi, Sammi I was told by @Mvcg66b3r if you can review my entry that i made on WDIV'S wiki article, its about the SNL 50 situation where WDIV cut away from the special 13 minutes before it was over. Thank You. JAV317 (talk) 22:30, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@JAV317 I think a better question to ask is this. Is one 13-minute automation failure notable enough to receive coverage sufficient that it belongs in the encyclopedia entry of a 75-year-old TV station? My answer is no. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 23:29, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree, Wikipedia is used to archive what happens with these stations and their notable events, if you diagree with me, then you should also be against whats on KTXL-TV wiki and how it has the time they did the same with Miss Universe 2015. JAV317 (talk) 00:35, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
and KCRA-TV having a section called "Notable Incidents" JAV317 (talk) 00:57, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Those are the two Sacramento network affiliates I haven't rewritten, @JAV317. When I get to them, that content will be handled differently. The KCRA notable incidents section and the KTXL controversy section contain some content that belongs in those articles, but not all of it (certainly not the Miss Universe error!), and not under that organization where it's basically a WP:CSECTION violation. That sort of content only belongs in the article in truly exceptional circumstances (e.g. KVOA's Super Bowl incident).
Your comment evinces I think a bigger difference from the way I see things. Wikipedia isn't a bulletin board where every broadcast station foible merits undue placement in an article. I've clipped articles like [1] and [2], but I'd never use them in an article. But things that result in real, sustained controversy merit treatment, in proportion with their importance to their subject, up to cases like KTTL where the controversy at hand is the article's driving force. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 01:35, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that was my biggest concern was that my entry was deleted while there was similar things on other Wikipedia pages, but what about the part where the Detroit Free Press talks about how SNL didn't air its first 2 season and instead they aired on WKBD-TV. Can that go on the Programming preemptions? JAV317 (talk) 02:01, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@JAV317, correctly done articles don't have sections like that (except KSL). Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 02:16, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

On Milwaukee PBS, the city appears twice, in the header and its own field. That's important when two stations share the same city of license. Also there's no doc page like in Template:Infobox television station. You might want to get help with this new template. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 04:50, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't yet gotten around to writing up documentation @Mvcg66b3r, but I can certainly do so. Thanks for catching the double city bug. Sammi Brie (she/her · t · c) 05:43, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Inquirer News Tonight. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Inquirer News Tonight), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
