"New York (city)" or "New York City"?

@Seasider53 and Castncoot: There were some recent edits at the Queens article regarding the name of "New York City", and it got me wondering if this article should actually be called New York (city), to distinguish it from New York (state). GNIS calls the city "New York", while the city officially calls itself the City of New York. (Sinatra calls it "New York, New York"). Just wondering.
