Jeremy Allen White (born 17 February 1991) is an American actor and model. Raised in New York City, White began his career with small-budget independent films, before his breakthrough role as Phillip "Lip" Gallagher in the comedy-drama series Shameless, lasting from 2011 to 2021 and earning him a Critics' Choice Television Awards nomination. White has received widespread success and acclaim for playing chef Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto in the comedy-drama series The Bear (2022–present). For the role, he received three consecutive Golden Globe Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and numerous other accolades.

White's role as wrestler Kerry Von Erich in biographical drama film The Iron Claw also earned him extensive praise. White ventured into modelling in 2024 after becoming a global ambassador for Calvin Klein. His first advertisement campaign with the brand, released in 2024, became viral, earning over $12.7 million in media impact within 48 hours. White is set to depict singer Bruce Springsteen in biographical drama film Deliver Me from Nowhere (2025).

Early life

Jeremy Allen White was born in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City on 17 February 1991,[1] to Eloise Ziegler and Richard White.[2][3] He grew up in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens neighborhood.[1] His mother is from North Carolina.[4] White's parents are both former actors, having met when his father attended a play his mother acted in. As a child, Allen began acting in theatre, attributing it towards him gaining confidence in performing.[3]

Throughout elementary school, White was a dancer who performed ballet, jazz, and tap dance. Upon entering a new middle school dance program at the age of 13, he decided to pursue acting.[5] He attended the Professional Performing Arts School in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan.[6]

Career

Acting

White had his first acting roles in 2006, in the film Beautiful Ohio and television series Conviction.[7] Following a series of small roles, White received his breakthrough role in the comedy-drama series Shameless as Phillip "Lip" Gallagher, the eldest son living in a dysfunctional household. He was cast shortly after graduating from the Professional Performing Arts School.[8] White portrayed the character in 134 episodes between 2011 and 2021. After the show's end, White recalled being in an "upsetting head space" and had doubts on whether he could act outside of the show.[9]

In 2022, White was cast in the lead role of the Hulu series The Bear. He plays the troubled New York chef Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto, who returns to his hometown of Chicago to save his deceased brother's failing restaurant. To prepare for the role, he attended classes at the Institute of Culinary Education alongside his co-star Ayo Edebiri.[10] The role has won him a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, three Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy, two Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, and two Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.[11][12]

White's portrayal of wrestler Kerry Von Erich in The Iron Claw (2023) earned him extensive praise.[13] White has been cast as Bruce Springsteen in the biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere, set to be written and directed by Scott Cooper.[14] Based upon the eponymous book by Warren Zanes, the film will chronicle Springsteen's journey towards completing his 1982 album Nebraska.[15] In January 2025, it was announced that White would star in a limited series adaptation of Enigma Variations, a novel by Italian-American writer André Aciman. He is set to play the lead role, Paul, and serve as the executive producer of the series.[16][17]

Modelling

In January 2024, White became a global ambassador for Calvin Klein underwear.[18][19] For its online campaign, he wore the brand's Spring 2024 men's underwear collection, and the advertisement generated $12.7 million in media impact value in less than 48 hours.[20] In August, White's second campaign with the brand was released, with him wearing the fall and winter 2024 collection.[21][22]

Personal life

White first met actress Addison Timlin while at high school when they were both 14 years old, though the pair did not enter a relationship.[1] They reunited whilst filming Afterschool (2008) at 17 years old, and married in 2019.[23] They have two daughters, born in October 2018 and December 2020.[24][25] Timlin filed for divorce in May 2023.[26] White started dating Spanish singer Rosalía shortly afterwards, the relationship lasting until mid 2024.[27][28][29] He was seen kissing The Bear co-star Molly Gordon in September 2024.[30][31]
