The Battle of Qafë Prush was a significant armed confrontation that occurred on May 6, 1997, near the border village of Qafë Prush involving the Kosovo Liberation Army and Yugoslav army.[1]
Background
As tensions escalated in Kosovo during the 1990s, the Kosovo Liberation Army sought to challenge Serbian forces through organized armed resistance. On May 6, 1997, a group of KLA fighters, including Luan Haradinaj, Ramush Haradinaj, Fehmi Lladrovci, Xhevë Krasniqi-Lladrovci, Ilaz Kodra, and Ali Ahmeti, attempted to cross the border near Vlahne and proceed towards Kuzhin. This movement was part of a broader KLA strategy to secure strategic routes and supply lines.[1]
The Ambush
Yugoslav army aware of KLA activities in the region, set up an ambush along the group's planned route. During the ensuing conflict, Luan Haradinaj was killed,[2] and other fighters, including Ramush Haradinaj and Fehmi Lladrovci, sustained injuries.[3][4] Despite heavy artillery attacks by Yugoslav forces, the surviving fighters managed to retrieve Luan Haradinaj’s body and retreat to Vlahne, where he was buried.[5]
Aftermath
The Ambush at Qafë Prush underscored the risks faced by the Kosovo Liberation Army. Although the ambush resulted in a tactical setback, Luan Haradinaj’s death is commemorated as a symbol of sacrifice and national unity in Kosovo.[6]
