Slocum, the Aggies finished the season with an overall record of 8–4, going 5–3 in Big 12 play to finish in a three-way tie for second in the conference's South Division. The team played home games at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas.

A week before the game, the annual Aggie Bonfire collapsed, killing 12 people and injuring another 27.[2] The respective marching bands dedicated their halftime performances to those lost and injured in the collapse.[3]
