Question from Eternal-Opto-Mistic-Wonderer (14:47, 31 December 2024)

Good morning. Nothing to ask yet. And, I'm not sure I'll be a true editor. I'm more interested in learning what exists and positing what might be; that is, trying to "wonder" aloud aimlessly and seeking the worlds' response. --Eternal-Opto-Mistic-Wonderer (talk) 14:47, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. 2025 Update from Women in Green

Hello LEvalyn:

2024 has wrapped up, and what a full year it was for WikiProject Women in Green! Over the past year, we hosted two edit-a-thons, one themed around women's history and another on women around the world. We also managed to achieve most of our 2024 annual goals, nominating 75 articles for GA, reviewing 64 GA nominations, nominating 8 articles for FAC, peer reviewing 3 articles and reviewing 10 FAC nominations. Excellent work, and thank you to everyone involved!

For 2025 we have a new set of goals for nominations and reviews. In particular, we would like to see more articles on our Hot 100 list being improved and nominated for GA this year. If you take a look at the list and see an article you are interested in contributing to, feel free to add it and yourself to our Hot 100 project discussion. You might even find someone interested in collaborating with you!

This year, as with every year, we hope you will join us in helping improve our coverage of women and women's works on this encyclopedia. Every contribution helps. We'll see you around!

Hello and thank you so much for your excellent review. I plan to get started addressing your concerns in the next 24 hours. Apologies for the delay. Viriditas (talk) 12:39, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, thank you for letting me know! I was sort of pausing on doing the rest of the review until I was sure you would want to continue. Question from InekeCrezee (08:37, 5 January 2025)

Hello mentor, I am very happy to have your assistance! I have been battling fake information in my wikipedia page for many years. for some reason, my date of birth is coming up as 01 January 1950 and I am at my wits end trying to change this as it is incorrect. Please assist. Happy New Year and many thanks! Ineke Hendrika Martine Crezee --InekeCrezee (talk) 08:37, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Dr. Crezee, and welcome to Wikipedia! How frustrating. Wikipedia's policy is to to only include birthdays when they have been reported in multiple secondary sources or published by the person themselves. (You can read the policy here.) It looks like for now you've successfully removed the date; I have added your biography to my "watch list" and I will keep an eye out to make sure the date is not re-added. If you would like a birth year to be included, and for it to be the correct one, you could make a post on a public social media site that just says "For the record, I was born in XXXX!" and that can be used to put the correct year in the article. Just send me the link if you decide you want to do that.
Also -- as annoying as I'm sure this has been, since you have an account now, you could consider making improvements to Wikipedia's articles about linguistics topics! The humanities can get a bit overlooked here, and your expertise could be a real boon to the encyclopedia. As long as your changes include a citation (even an offline/paywalled one) they would be very welcome.
Let me know any time can help further! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 08:55, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, actually, looking more closely, it seems you intended to update the birthdate, not remove it! The birthdate is "hidden" in the article right now, so your change isn't visible to readers. I can un-hide it if that is what you prefer; just let me know. (Or you can un-hide it by deleting the "<!--" parts.) ~ L 🌸 (talk) 09:00, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from CeleniaSig (12:24, 8 January 2025)

Hi, I was looking through the Vulpes page when i noticed an extinct species called "Vulpes Gigas". I wanted to find more information about it, but after at least an hour of searching i can't find any proof that it actually existed. I don't question it existing, as it's referenced in other websites, but I can't find a solid source for it. What should I do? --CeleniaSig (talk) 12:24, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello CeleniaSig, and thanks for raising this topic. I... actually do now question the existence of Vulpes gigas? I get zero hits on Google Scholar, which is pretty unusual for something that's real! And the websites seem like they could have just gotten their information from Wikipedia, in an example of WP:Citogenesis. I notice that it's only mentioned in list of 'fossil species' on the main Vulpes article, where there isn't a single citation to support that it's real.
Since there is no citation, you can delete Vulpes gigas from the list with an edit summary like "removing unsourced material that I can't reliably verify elsewhere." If someone else with more expertise is able to find a reliable source with more information, they can add it back in with a citation. (And then you can read their cited source to learn more!) You could also mention on the article's talk page that you are doing this, to encourage other editors with more expertise on the topic to weigh in.
Thanks for your eagle eye here, and let me know if you have any future questions! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 22:57, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just seeing this now, thanks for the support! CeleniaSig (talk) 03:45, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Sugar candyy on Rivers State House of Assembly (20:51, 9 January 2025)

The current speaker of River State is Honorable Victor, Oko-Jumbo --Sugar candyy (talk) 20:51, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Sugar candyy, and welcome to Wikipedia! It sounds like you've found some outdated information that needs to be updated. This is a great kind of edit to make yourself, to learn the ropes of Wikipedia. Here are the general steps:
  1. Find a news article that says Victor Oko-Jumbo has become the Speaker of the Assembly.
  2. Click "edit" on the article to delete the current sentence and add something like, "Since [YEAR], the Speaker of the State Assembly is Victor Oko-Jumbo".
  3. Click the "cite" button and follow the instructions here to put a reference to your news article after the sentence.
If you have any trouble, let me know and I am glad to help, or you can get a faster response by asking at the Teahouse. Happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 23:02, 9 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Aorclippy (16:58, 10 January 2025)

Pardon my query: What is the consensus format on dates? I often see dates posted as, for example, "March 10 1980", instead of "March 10th, 1980". Technically this is grammatically incorrect, but is this the accepted date format? --Aorclippy (talk) 16:58, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reaching out to check! It looks like in the Manual of Style at MOS:DATE (short version at WP:DATEOVERVIEW), the format “March 10 1980” is an error. The style is to use either “10 March 1980” or “March 10, 1980” (which just has to be consistent within the article). You can improve these when you find them by adding the missing comma. Question from XZY5 (21:54, 12 January 2025)

Hello! Hope you are well. I'm currently watching the English and Bangla pages for Kazi Nzarul Islam and have noticed several points of information present in the Bangla page missing from the English page. Is there any protocol I should be following to make the English page mirror the Bangla page more so they match? --XZY5 (talk) 21:54, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello XZY5, and welcome to Wikipedia! Translation is very valuable, so I am glad to hear you are interested in assisting here. I don't do this much myself, but I think this help page will give some useful guidance. The main ideas, as far as I know, are, 1, each wikipedia has its own policies and anything added to the English wikipedia must follow English wikipedia's policies; and, 2, translations need to be properly attributed. You can also ask at the Teahouse to get advice from a wider pool of editors. Good luck, and happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 02:50, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply! You mentioned that translations need to be attributed, I'm a native Bangla speaker and can translate to English. Is that ok or is there is a way to appropriately cite that when making the translations? XZY5 (talk) 18:22, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Adrikshit (06:07, 15 January 2025)

I have warned twice a user for spreading misinformation and ten times in edit. still, he kept changing and started giving fake counter warnings to prove his points and removed high-quality citations. what should I do? --Adrikshit (talk) 06:07, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the discussions on your talk page, it appears that you are involved in a content dispute in a contentious topic. Wikipedia's policy about neutral point of view requires that all major viewpoints are considered, which may include viewpoints you disagree with. A new wikipedian trying to edit a contentious topic should approach debates by assuming that you don't already know what the outcome should be for any particular article or edit. That includes not assuming that you already know what counts as a "high-quality" citation for that topic. To get consensus about what makes for a good citation, you can ask at the Reliable Sources noticeboard and check their list of sources that have been discussed before. I recommend that you do not issue any further warnings. Instead, I suggest you ask for more opinions about how the article is written, either at the Reliable Sources noticeboard that I mentioned or through dispute resolution. I also recommend that you slow down and focus on assuming good faith when trying to determine how the articles should be written. Your current approach seems highly confrontational, and debating in bad faith is likely to lead to being blocked from Wikipedia. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 01:52, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from NAL Editor (20:25, 16 January 2025)

Hi, LEvalyn! I didn't realize I'd be editing code. Yikes. The birth and death dates for Sam Bernard are incorrect. Per his birth certificate and tombstone, he was born 16 July 1863, and per his death certificate and tombstone, he died 17 May 1927 (at sea). How the heck do I correct this? --NAL Editor (talk) 20:25, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello NAL Editor, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for catching this error. It sounds like there are two things going on here! First, if you want to edit in an interface that looks less like code, try clicking "edit source" like usual and then look for a pencil icon in the top-right, next to the word "preview". Click that pencil and choose "visual editor". If you want to edit the infobox from that mode, double-click on it. You should be able to just type in the correct dates, but if you have any trouble, let me know.
The second thing I want to give some advice on it how to add citations verifying these new dates. The usual thing is that the first paragraph and the infobox will summarize information, and the main article will explain it and cite sources. It looks like Sam Bernard doesn't specify any birth/death dates in the main article at all, so it would be really helpful if you could add that information, and follow these instructions to add a source. Usually, Wikipedia prefers to cite a biography or other article about a person, rather than their birth certificate or tombstone -- that way we can be certain it's the right Sam Bernard's information. An obituary is often a good source. Do you know of something to cite? If not, I can help you look.
Thanks again for helping Wikipedia be more accurate, and happy editing! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 00:00, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

GAN paperwork

Hi, just a note on how to record GAN results: there are several steps, putting the icon on the article, marking the talk page as passed and the WikiProject status as GA, and putting a link on the WP:GA list page. All of these can be done automatically by running the GAN tool.

The GAN Instructions page usefully adds:

"Many of the technical steps for nominators are automated with the GAN-helper user script (how to install), and the GANReviewTool does the same when you review an article."

All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:44, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You will probably need to a way to get in touch with the radio station, in that case. This is Wikipedia; I can only answer questions about writing encyclopedia articles. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 18:39, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Adrikshit (06:37, 5 February 2025)

Hello, A guy is kept changing sources and relevant information from the page.i have reported several times but he kept changing and i am tired of telling him but he wants to spread his propaganda and dont even add proper source. I have talked to admin and they dont care. --Adrikshit (talk) 06:37, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like one of the people you were in a content dispute with has been blocked, actually. It also looks like you are not explaining your edits (cordially!) on the talk page when you encounter disagreement: that is an important first step in reaching a consensus for what an article should say. Just writing comments back and forth in edit summaries is not enough, you need to write on the Talk page with an explanation of what you think needs changing and why your sources support that change. You should try to find a compromise wording that everybody can accept.
I suggest reading the article on dispute resolution to learn how Wikipedia tries to resolve disagreements about articles. If the Talk page conversation doesn't lead to an agreement, the next steps are to try asking more people to weigh in. If you're disagreeing about sources, try WP:RSN. Otherwise, try WP:3O or WP:DRN. Those options are explained in more detail at the dispute resolution page which, again, I urge you to read. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 08:08, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, you should maybe also take a look at WP:Civility -- one principle of cooperation on Wikipedia is that being right is not enough, you have to maintain a collegial tone and assume good faith even if you are right and the other person is wrong. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 08:11, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Waypoint Entertainment

Hi LEvalyn, I work for the production company Waypoint Entertainment and have been working on a draft, here: Draft:Waypoint Entertainment. I see that you are an AFC reviewer, and I was hoping you might be interested in taking a look. I am relatively new to Wikipedia, and I've been working on this draft for a while and doing my best to learn from the process. I would love your feedback, and if you think it's ready, I'd be happy for you to publish it. Thank you, Fluffybunny789 (talk) 18:31, 18 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Rakesh WikiEditor (17:22, 22 February 2025)

"Hello, I want to ask if a famous person has 2-3 major authentic and reliable news sources covering them, would their Wikipedia page get published?" --Rakesh WikiEditor (talk) 17:22, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Raskesh WikiEditor and welcome to Wikipedia! The sources you describe would usually, in principle, satisfy the WP:GNG criteria to have an article, though it’s important for the sources to also be independent (ie, a press release will not do). If you have a specific subject in mind, feel free to link me to the best sources you’ve found and I’m happy to offer my opinion as to whether they are suitable. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 22:39, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mohamed7mmm on Unreal Engine (17:39, 22 February 2025)

hey uh i recently made a Anonymous edit and uh my ip address is publicly visible and i was scared that my IP can get taken and someone will make bad things with it. and i made a wikipedia account but my IP address is still publicly visible how to remove akd hide it? --Mohamed7mmm (talk) 17:39, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You can file a request for oversight to have the edit hidden (see Wikipedia:Oversight). Best way to do so is through email, as per top banner of linked page. Best — 🪫Volatile 📲T | ⌨️C 17:42, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just to add make sure to include the URL of the edit you want suppressed. — 🪫Volatile 📲T | ⌨️C 17:43, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Omnighpotent (18:08, 22 February 2025)

Hi LEvalyn,

I've created this account today since I saw an opportunity to contribute to a page on the site. I've edited some pages before but that was 10 years ago.

My question is regarding a conflict of interest in the edit I want to make since I am a co-author of the paper I want to use a model from. Is there a protocol to ensure unbiased information, like a review process?

Best, --Omnighpotent (talk) 18:08, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Omnighpotent, welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for being so conscientious. Our guidelines around editing with a conflict of interest are explained at WP:SIMPLECOI. In general, we ask editors with a conflict of interest to use an “edit request” on the Talk page of an article, so an uninvolved editor can evaluate and actually make the change. There is a helpful wizard for edit requests at WP:ERW. In this case, feel free to “ping” me by including {{u|LEvalyn}} in your edit request and I’ll take a look. Thank you! ~ L 🌸 (talk) 22:35, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again,
Thank you, I've taken a look at the CoI guidelines. I also went to the talk page of the article I want to improve, and it seemed that a co-author of mine, Spaniol, had already beat me to it, but had it rejected. I talked to him about it privately just now and he said that he had edited the article originally not realising the COI, and thus had the edit rejected.
Our paper, in essence, just defines greenwashing based on the number of definitions found in existing literature and compiles them into a flowchart which makes it easy to understand what needs to occur for something to qualify as greenwashing.
I must apologise for my fellow coauthor's negligence regarding the COI.
I don't think I should make a new topic on the talk page when he already proposed very similar changes.
Sorry about the confusion. If you still want to take a look, you can find it here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Greenwashing#c-MrOllie-20250222141000-MatthewSpaniol-20250222124600
Best regards,
Martin Nielsen Omnighpotent (talk) 17:55, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for providing this additional information, and again thank you for your conscientiousness. I think the proposed flowchart image would be too attention-grabbing in the context of the article, but a prose summary of your article's main points would be a very helpful addition to the "Characteristics" section. Something along the lines of:
"A concept analysis by Spaniol et al. describes several related activities that are not, strictly speaking, greenwashing. For example, if a claim is not part of marketing a product or service toward consumers, it might be better described as..." [and then highlight a few key ones]
If you can write a brief summary like that (importantly, one which does not infringe on the copyrighted phrasing of your publications!) I would be glad to look at it for addition to the article. ~ L 🌸 (talk) 22:36, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
