Aakanksha Singh (born 30 July 1990) is an Indian actress who predominantly works in Hindi and Telugu films and television. Singh is a recipient of an Indian Telly Award, along with nomination for a SIIMA Award.

Singh started her career as a theatre artiste, and made her screen debut with the television series Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha (2012–2013), which earned her the Indian Telly Award for Fresh New Face – Female. Following few other television appearances, Singh ventured to Hindi films with Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017).

Singh made her Telugu film debut with Malli Raava (2017), for which she received the SIIMA Award for Best Female Debut – Telugu nomination. She then appeared in successful films such as Devadas (2018) and Pailwaan (2019). Singh expanded to streaming series Rangbaaz: Darr Ki Rajneeti (2022), Meet Cute (2022) and Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond (2024).

Life and family

Singh was born on 30 July 1990 in Jaipur, Rajasthan.[1] Her mother is a theatre artist. Singh is a physiotherapist by education.[2] On 7 December 2014, Singh married Kunal Sain, a marketing professional, in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Jaipur.[3][4]

Career

Early work in television (2012–2016)

Singh made her screen debut with the television series Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha.[5] She portrayed Megha Vyas Bhatnagar, a widow opposite Kunal Karan Kapoor, from 2012 to 2013. Her performance earned her the Indian Telly Award for Fresh New Face - Female and Gold Award for Debut in a Lead Role – Female. A succes, it expanded across two seasons.[6][7]

In 2015, Singh appeared in the finite series, Gulmohar Grand, where she played Anahita Mehta Fernandez, a hotel staff opposite Gaurav Chopra and Aashim Gulati.[8] She has also been part of Box Cricket League for the team Ahmedabad Express. She then played an advocate in an episode of Aye Zindagi alongside Kanwar Dhillon, which marked her final television appearance.[9]

Expansion to Hindi and Telugu films (2017–2021)

Singh expanded to Hindi films with Badrinath Ki Dulhania, in 2017. She played an air hostess Kiran opposite Gaurav Pandey.[10] The film was a commercial success and the tenth highest grossing film of the year.[11] In the same year, she made her Telugu film debut with Malli Raava opposite Sumanth, playing Anjali.[12] Hemanth Kumar noted, "Aakanksha is wonderful and she emotes with ease."[13] The film was a box office success and earned her the SIIMA Award for Best Female Debut – Telugu nomination.[14][15]

Singh in 2018

Singh started 2018 with two Hindi short films Methi Ke Laddoo and Qaid.[16] Following this, she appeared in the Telugu film Devadas opposite Nagarjuna, playing Jahnavi, a journalist.[17] The film became a moderate success, due to its big budget.[18] A critic of Sify was appreciative of her chemistry with Nagarjuna.[19]

Singh marked her Kannada film debut in 2019, with Pailwaan. She played Rukmini, a Marathi girl opposite Sudeepa.[20][21] The film was released in five languages and was a box office success, emerging as the third highest grossing Kannada film of the year.[22] Aravind Shwetha from The News Minute stated, "Aakanksha passes with flying colours, looking stylish and homely in turns as the script demands."[23]

Following a year hiatus, Singh expanded to streaming projects in 2021. She appeared in the Telugu series Parampara, playing Rachana opposite Naveen Chandra.[24] It has spanned across two seasons.[25] Sangeetha Devi Dundoo was appreciative of her for portraying the character's dealing with deceit at different levels.[26]

Success with streaming projects (2022–present)

The year 2022 proved to be a crucial year in Singh's career with three film and three web releases.[27] Her first release came with her Tamil film debut, Veerapandiyapuram, where she played a teacher Yashoda. The film was a box office failure.[28] Logesh Balachandran of The Times of India stated, "Yasodha's characterisation has a purpose and the job is done convincingly by Aakanksha."[29] Her next release came with the Telugu–Tamil bilingual Clap, where she played an athlete Mithra opposite Aadhi Pinisetty.[30] Thadhagath Pathi stated, "Aakanksha delivers a strong performance despite limited screen time".[31] Singh then played Samaira, a pilot's wife opposite Ajay Devgn, in the Hindi film Runway 34.[32] The film underperformed at the box office.[33] Monika Rawal Kukreja noted, "Despite smaller part and less attention, Singh plays her part well in handful of scenes."[34]

Following this, Singh expanded to Hindi web series with Escaype Live, playing a police officer Devna.[35] She then played Sana, a politician's wife opposite Viineet Kumar in the Hindi series Rangbaaz: Darr Ki Rajneeti.[36] Roktim Rajpal of India Today criticised her and Kumar's pairing, but added that she "shines in a few scenes".[37] Her last release of the year came with Meet Cute, a Telugu anthology series produced by Nani.[38] She played Pooja, a divorcee opposite Dheekshith Shetty.[39] Manoj Kumar R noted, "Aakanksha bring her A-game to her characters and seamlessly complement Rohini's performance."[40]

With no release in 2023, Singh started 2024 with the Hindi series Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond, playing Richa.[41][42] Later the year, she played Isha, an IT company manager opposite Vaibhav.[43] A critic of 123telugu noted, "Aakanksha gives a measured performance as Isha, bringing depth to the role."[44]

Singh was placed 12th in Bangalore Times' 30 Most Desirable Women list of 2019.[45] Singh is a celebrity endorser for brands and products such as Bru, Complan, Saffola and Evion among others.[46][47]
