Helly Shah (born 7 January 1996) is an Indian actress who predominantly works in Hindi television. Shah is best recognised for her portrayal of Swara Bose Maheshwari in Swaragini – Jodein Rishton Ke Sur, Devanshi Upadhyay Bakshi in Devanshi, dual portrayal of Saltanat Shah Khan and Kaynaat Shah in Sufiyana Pyaar Mera and Riddhima Raisinghania in Ishq Mein Marjawan 2.[1] Shah is a recipient of two ITA Awards and a Gold Award.[2]

Early life

Shah was born on 7 January 1996,[3] in Ahmedabad, into a Gujarati family.[4] Shah is a vegetarian.[5]

Career

Debut and early work (2010–2014)

Shah began her acting career when she was in 8th grade, with Zindagi Ka Har Rang...Gulaal, where she played Talli from 2010 to 2011.[6][4] In 2011, she played Shruti in Diya Aur Baati Hum playing Shruti.[7]

From 2012 to 2013, she played Alaxmi / Laxmi Kapadia opposite Sujay Reu in Alaxmi - Hamari Super Bahu.[4] In 2013, she played Ami Joshipura, a girl struggling with her father's death in Khelti Hai Zindagi Aankh Micholi.[8] In 2014, Shah played Aashi Dubey in Khushiyon Kii Gullak Aashi.[9]

Success and recognition (2015–2019)

Shah's career marked a turning point with Swaragini – Jodein Rishton Ke Sur,[10][11] where she played a Bengali rock singer Swara Bose Maheshwari opposite Varun Kapoor, from 2015 to 2016. It was her breakthrough and her performance earned her AVTA Actor Of The Year – Female nomination.[12]

In 2016, Shah participated in the dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (season 9), where she was placed at 15th position. From 2016 to 2017, she played Devanshi Upadhyay Bakshi, a girl selected as dedication to goddess in Devanshi, opposite Mudit Nayar. Her performance won her the ITA Award for Best Actress – Popular.[13]

In 2019, Shah played triple characters of Saltanat Shah Khan, Kaynaat Shah and Shaira Shah Khan in Sufiyana Pyaar Mera, opposite Rajveer Singh and Vijayendra Kumeria.[14] Her performance as Kaynaat earned her the ITA Award for Best Actress in a Negative Role and Gold Awards and Gold Award for Best Actress in a Negative Role – Jury.[15] In the same year, she played Neha in Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke opposite Aaditya Bajpayee.[16]

Career progression and streaming projects (2020–present)

From 2020 to 2021, Shah played Riddhima Raisinghania, a physiotherapist in Ishq Mein Marjawan 2 opposite Rrahul Sudhir and Vishal Vashishtha.[17] In 2021, it was expanded into a web series, Ishq Mein Marjawan 2: Naya Safar, which marked her web debut.[18] Her performance earned her two ITA Award for Best Actress – Popular nominations.[19] Shah later appeared in two short films: Happy Birthday, in 2020 and Zibah in 2022.[20]

Following a small hiatus, Shah expanded to streaming projects in 2024 with Gullak, where she played a doctor, Dr. Preeti Singh opposite Vaibhav Raj Gupta.[21] Shweta Keshri of India Today found her to be a "refreshing" addition to the cast.[22] In the same year, she played an army doctor, Dr. Tanya in the series Naam Namak Nishan opposite Varun Sood. Bhawna Arya of Times Now stated that she does "justice" to her part.[23][24] Following this, Shah made her film debut with Kaya Palat, where she played a Kashmiri girl, Kaya.[25] In her last release of the year, she played Vrinda in the series Pyramid – Scheme Ya Scam.[26]

Shah will next appear in two Gujarati films, Deda opposite Gaurav Paswala,[27] and an untitled film opposite Vatsal Seth.[28]

Shah was placed 47th in Eastern Eye's Top 50 Asian celebrities of 2020. In the same year, Eastern Eye listed her in its Dynamic dozen for the decade list at 4th position.[29][30] In 2021, she was placed in Eastern Eye's Top 30 under 30 Global Asian Stars list.[31] In 2023, she ranked 3rd in Times Now "Popular Television Actresses" list.[32] Shah made her Cannes Film Festival debut in 2022.[33][34] She unveiled the poster of her debut film Kaya Palat at the festival.[35] The actress walked the red carpet for L’Oréal Paris at the event, becoming first television actress to do so.[36]
