- Brazil qualified for the knockout stage after beating a gallant Australia 2-0.
- Croatia draws 0-0 with Japan.
- Italy draws 1-1 with the United States.
- Ghana defeat the Czech Republic 2-0.
- Portugal qualified for the last 16 by beating Iran 2-0. The result also means that Iran has been eliminated.
- Mexico and Angola draw 0-0. Mexico leads Group D but could still be eliminated. Angola remains scoreless after two games.
- Netherlands defeats Côte d'Ivoire 2-1. The result ensures that Netherlands and Argentina will go forward from Group C to the second round, and that Côte d'Ivoire and Serbia and Montenegro will not find a place in the last 16.
- Argentina defeats Serbia and Montenegro 6-0, the second widest victory margin in the World Cup Finals to date after Germany's win over Saudi Arabia in 2002.
- Sweden wins 1-0 against Paraguay, scoring in the 88th minute, ensuring that Paraguay cannot qualify for the second round. Sweden or Trinidad and Tobago can still join England in the last 16.
- England scores two goals in the last 10 minutes after many lost chances to beat Trinidad and Tobago 2-0, becoming the third team to secure a place in the second round.

- Saudi Arabia draw 2-2 with Tunisia. Tunisia's Radhi Jaidi scores in stoppage time to level the match.
- Spain defeats Ukraine 4-0, with goals scored by Xabi Alonso, David Villa (2) and Fernando Torres. This is Spain's first win in their World Cup Finals opener since 1950. They have not been beaten in 22 matches.
- Switzerland hold France to a 0-0 draw. This makes it no goals in France's last four World Cup Finals matches.
- Brazil defeats Croatia 1-0. Kaká scores the match's only goal. With this victory, the defending champions set a record for the longest winning streak of a team in World Cup Finals, with eight consecutive victories (2002's clean sweep and this one).
- Korea Republic defeats Togo 2-1, with substitute Ahn Jung-hwan scoring the winning goal. This marks their first World Cup Finals victory outside their home country.
