Avian flu or Bird flu or Avian influenza virus refers to a subset of Orthomyxoviridae that creates influenza in birdss and are endemic in birds.
The species of Orthomyxoviridae that can causes flu in birds is influenza A virus. All subtypes of it infect birds so for many purposes influenza A virus is bird flu virus.
However most people use "bird flu" to mean H5N1 which is the subtype of the species influenza A virus that is a current pandemic threat.
