Gravity is directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who also wrote the screenplay with his son. The project was in development at Universal Pictures for several years, but the studio placed it in turnaround. Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the project, which in February of 2010 attracted the attention of Angelina Jolie, who turned a sequel to Wanted.[1] Later in the month, she passed on the project,[2] partially because the studio did not want to pay her $20 million fee,[3] and because she wanted to work on directing her Bosnian war film.[4] In March, Robert Downey Jr. entered talks to be cast in a supporting role.[5]
In mid-2010, Marion Cotillard tested for the female lead role. By August of 2010, Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively were in the running for the role.[3] In September, Cuarón received approval from Warner Bros. to offer the role without a screen test to Natalie Portman, who was being praised for her recently released film Black Swan.[6] Portman passed on the project due to scheduling conflicts, and Warner Bros. then approached Sandra Bullock for the role.[4] In November of 2010, Downey Jr. left the project to star in How to Talk to Girls, a project in development with Shawn Levy attached to direct.[7] In the following December, with Bullock signed for the lead role, George Clooney replaced Downey Jr. in the supporting role.[8]
Gravity has a production budget of $80 million and is being filmed digitally. It will be converted to 3D in post-production. Filming began in London in May 2011.[9]
