George Lopez is an American sitcom starring the comedian George Lopez. The show originally aired on ABC from March 27, 2002 to May 23, 2007. Reruns of the show now air in broadcast syndication, The CW Plus, and Nick at Nite in the United States, and on Telelatino in Canada.

The show stars George Lopez as manager of Powers Brothers Aviation, an airplane parts factory. He is married to Angie Palmero and has two outgoing children, Max and Carmen. They all live together in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. George had a childhood that was nowhere near perfect, physically abandoned by his father and further traumatized by a careless, abusive, alcoholic mother, Benita "Benny" Lopez. She usually criticizes Angie's cooking and parenting skills. George and Benny's adult relationship mainly consists of the two of them trading insults about each other, mainly referring to George's childhood. They appear to care for each other, and George has admitted his feelings for Benny in some episodes. Benny works at Powers Brothers Aviation, as does George's best friend, Ernesto "Ernie" Cardenas, who is mostly luckless in the dating area and still lives with his mom. George's father-in-law, Dr. Victor "Vic" Palmero, thinks Angie should have married someone better than George but as the series progresses he begins to respect and accept him. George always tries to catch his children getting in trouble when they do something bad, whether it be by confronting them straight on, or sneakily investigating, then punishing them later. It is still always shown that George still loves and cares deeply for his family.

In 2000, after several years of performing stand-up comedy, Lopez was approached by actress Sandra Bullock for Lopez to produce and star in a comedy. Bullock was concerned about the lack of Hispanic-oriented sitcoms on American television and pushed to get a sitcom on television that starred Hispanics but wasn't exclusively about the Hispanic American community. ABC, who had been criticized by Hispanic American groups for lack of Latinos on their television movies, quickly picked up the television series. In 2006 Freddie Prinze, Jr. guest starred on the show for a crossover with Freddie. Freddie starred Freddie Prinze Jr. and Brian Austin Green from Beverly Hills 90210. The series, however, was short lived.

For the first five seasons, the show had an all-Hispanic cast with the exception of Albanian-American actress Masiela Lusha, who played George's daughter Carmen. George Lopez said that due to creative differences between him and Lusha, Lusha's character was written out of the show after Season 5. Lusha did appear in the 2007 season premiere, when her character left to attend a college in another state. She was replaced by Aimee Garcia as George's niece, Veronica (making for an all-Hispanic cast the final season). When the show first aired on ABC a few episodes were rated TV-14 for language, violence, and strong profanity in Spanish. Nick at Nite changed every episode to TV-PG.

On May 15, 2007, the series was canceled and ABC removed all mentions of the show on its website. ^[2] The final episode aired on May 23, 2007, and the show last aired on ABC on September 7, 2007.

Although its last season aired on Wednesdays, the show was the last program from the ABC's former TGIF lineup to air. The show was replaced by the short-lived series Cavemen.

On March 8, 2007, it was announced that George Lopez would join the Nick at Nite lineup. It first aired on Nick at Nite on September 10, 2007 - it was the youngest non-original show to air on Nick at Nite ^[1] (until it was announced that Everybody Hates Chris would join the lineup).

On April 17, 2007, Warner Home Video released seasons 1 and 2 on DVD in Region 1.

The show entered syndication one month after the series finale on ABC. The show currently airs on broadcast syndication, The CW Plus, Nick@Nite, in the United States, and on Telelatino in Canada. The show will air soon on TBS.^[4]. And it also airs on KCAL 9 in Los Angeles, CA.

Never a major hit in primetime, the show became an unexpected success in syndication. Many markets also moved the show from overnight timeslots to more desirable ones. [1]
