Revision as of 21:45, 20 May 2008
Template:Future sport The UEFA Cup 2008-09 will be the 51st edition of the UEFA Cup football tournament. The final will be played at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, home ground of Fenerbahçe, in Istanbul, Turkey on May 20, 2009.[1]
Early issues
English clubs controversy
A controversy arose over whether one of the FA Cup finalists, Cardiff City, could qualify for the UEFA Cup should they win the cup. Cardiff City are one of three Welsh clubs in England's Football League. England's governing body, The FA, had initially announced that they have no power to nominate Cardiff City for European competition under any circumstances. Cardiff City had threatened legal action should the FA deny them a place in Europe, while UEFA president Michel Platini made a statement widely interpreted as supporting Cardiff City's position.[2] However, as Cardiff did not win the cup, the issue is no longer relevant.[3]
Association team allocation
122 teams will participate in the 2008-2009 UEFA Cup from 53 UEFA associations. Each association qualifies a certain number of teams to the UEFA Cup based on its league co-efficient. Through domestic competitions (national championships and cups and league cups in certain countries) an association may qualify up to 4 teams. Below is the qualification scheme for the 2008-2009 UEFA Cup:
- Associations 1-6 each have 3 teams qualify
- Associations 7-8 each have 4 teams qualify
- Associations 9-15 each have 2 teams qualify
