Welcome!

Template:Austonesian language
Hi Lancepark! Just a suggestion: since the template {{Austronesian languages}} is quite massive, maybe you should place it below other existing subgroup templates, which are easier to navigate on first sight. Otherwise, chances are high that a reader won't even make it to the smaller navigation templates after going through {{Austronesian languages}}. But that's actually just a matter of taste. –Austronesier (talk) 14:04, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, that's actually a very good point with respect to navigation. Thanks for the suggestion. –Lancepark (talk) 14:20, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for July 21
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Odia language, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Baleswar. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Transliteration of Eastern Indo Aryan Languages
The Eastern Indo-Aryan languages, also known as Māgadhan languages, are spoken throughout the eastern Indian subcontinent. In all these languages the inherent vowel has a phonetic value of Open-mid back rounded vowel or /ɔ/ as opposed to mid central vowel (also known as schwa) or /ə/. Therefore the IAST doesn't provide a precise phonetic transliteration for these languages. The letter ‘a’ is misleading and shouldn't be used as it used for the ‘schwa’ in other Indian languages. Rather the letter ‘ô’ should be used for this purpose. If Bengali script has "ত" and Bengalis pronounce it /tɔ/ there is nevertheless an argument based on writing-system consistency for transliterating it as "त" or "ta." I hope you understand. Nishānt Omm (talk) 05:25, 2 September 2021 (UTC)
- Inherent vowel phonetics of Bengali and other Eastern Indo-Aryan languages are distinguishable and the same symbol 'ô' should not be used to denote them in transliterations as it not mandated officially and is not popular either. The phonetic symbol 'ô' is used in some ad-hoc Bengali related romanisations and cannot be used for the Odia equivalent here. For more info see here Romanisation of Bengali. Also, the letter you mentioned is not used in romanisations of other Eastern Indo-Aryan languages like Maithili, Assamese, Odia etc. Instead, IAST or ISO guidelines can be consulted for transliterating. If you don't prefer the above method, then Odia-specific romanisation can be used to show the phonetic. In this case, 'å' may be used for the respective phonetic value of Open-mid back rounded vowel or /ɔ/ for Odia letter 'ଅ' while also denoting the difference between in the two Eastern Indo Aryan Language. To maintain the ordering of Odia romanisation you can choose the following alternatives-
- ଅ ଆ
- å a (if Odia-specific romanisation is preferred)
- a ā (keeping IAST/ISO norms)

S sounds in Odia language
Although all three 's': ଶ, ଷ, and ସ are pronounced the same, traditionally they have distinct pronunciations in Classical Odia. Due to ignorance and lack of proper knowledge, people often pronounce them the same. But they are phonetically distinct sounds. ଶ = ɕɔ, ଷ = ʂɔ & ସ = sɔ Please don't make these sounds extinct in this language. Nishānt Omm (talk) 11:16, 2 September 2021 (UTC)
- These IPA sounds can be written if Odia script is used for writing Sanskrit, but not applicable when writing modern Odia. They can be retained in orthography but the IPA needs to be reflect the actual and accurate phonetics. Kindly go through the Odia IPA before making ad-hoc changes.
