Patriot system donation
Are you gonna add the patriot system donation or wait until it was successully donated and/or replaced by the same or better SAM system ? 2001:BB6:D01:AF00:9148:56A8:18E4:4740 (talk) 12:03, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- For now the Patriot system donation is added to the List of military aid to Ukraine during the Russo-Ukrainian War#R as [To be delivered]. When we get the confirmation that it was delivered then we'll update this article. Alin2808 (talk) 16:26, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

How many T-55 are in Romanian Armed Forces
According to International Institute for Strategic Studies (February 2022) there are ~162, but according to United Nations Register of Conventional Arms - Romania 2022 until 2025 there are 338. Are there any other sources to confirm how many are still in service and how many (possible) stored? Barossan (talk) 17:14, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- According to the latest study from the IISS (2025) it's estimated that there are 220 T-55s. UNROCA is no longer usable since Romania doesn't give detailed reports anymore since 2023. The number here was estimated by someone based on the number of battalions with T-55s (3 battalions x 54 tanks per battalion = 162), so that's at least 162 operational tanks. TR-580 in storage
Why the TR-580 is no longer in active service:
- Retired from Active Units: You will not find the TR-580 in any front-line unit. Active battalions use the TR-85M1 "Bizonul" (the modernized version) or the standard TR-85. Even the aging T-55AM (despite being older) remained in service longer than the TR-580 because they were simpler and more reliable and in a much greater number ( up to 3 battalions or more acc. to the latest information from UNROCA).
- Storage and Reserve: Most remaining TR-580s are in "Long-Term Preservation" (Mobilization Reserve). They are kept in storage depots and would only be reactivated in a case of general mobilization, though their mechanical readiness after decades of sitting is highly questionable (see similar SU-100 100 mm self-propelled anti-tank gun keept in storage but still appears in the statistics of UNROCA as beeing avaailbe in the Romanian Army).
- Training & Target Practice: A few units are kept at military schools for static training (mechanics/driver instruction) or repurposed as "hard targets" on firing ranges like Cincu or Smârdan.
Why is not activley used?
It suffers from reliability issues, particularly with its suspension and transmission and the numbers left (9 acc. to latest numbers) do not make them logistically viable. When the TR-85 arrived with a much more powerful engine (800HP) vs. the TR-580's (580HP), the 580 model became redundant. The Army chose to modernize the TR-85 into the "Bizonul" and let the TR-580 "retire" to the depots.
Summary: If you visit an active Romanian tank battalion today, you'll see TR-85M1s and perhaps a few TR-85s or T-55s in secondary role, but the TR-580 is effectively a museum piece or a reserve asset. Barossan (talk) 17:31, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
