Prequel or Sequel?
Not a wiki person, but the lede state's it's a prequel and the Plot sections says it's 30 years after the original. Please sort that out.
- The lede is wrong, as is whoever continues to list it as a prequel. The description on the Steam store and the in-game text explicitly state that it takes place AFTER the events of the first game. -- 136.181.195.25 (talk) 20:48, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- There is no source that clearly and explictly states that it takes place after the first game. It only says that it takes places 30 years after the pizza place closed its doors. Therefore, that falls under WP:OR. If anyone can find a source that clearly and explicitly states that this takes place after the events of FNAF 1, then I'll change my mind. TheMeaningOfBlah (talk) 21:19, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- Common sense? The pizza place is obviously still open in FNAF1, hence why they even have a night guard. If it's been 30 years since the pizza place was closed, to the point where the owners have to track down "leads" on finding materials from the restaurant, then it must happen after FNAF1. Regardless, I've changed the lede to list the game as "the third entry in the FNAF series" which does not imply its place in the timeline, only the fact that it is the series' third release, which cannot be disputed. This should suffice quite nicely. -- 136.181.195.25 (talk) 21:32, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
Are the endings relevant in the article?
Are they necessary? Even if they do not explicitly tell the reader how to obtain them, it still mentions them, which qualifies as a spoiler. They would be accepted on the game's wiki itself, but not a Wikipedia article; it is not in any way necessary to understand the plot of the game, and thus shouldn't be included. 2601:3:100:64B:7846:6A2E:65EF:27D0 (talk) 10:01, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
Possible plot rewrite
I have not played the games and I based this off non-RSes. Normally I wouldn't have bothered, but the current plot has a fair bit of OR anyway. Maybe some of this could be of use.
- Five Nights at Freddy's and its prequel Five Nights at Freddy's 2 take place at the fictional Chuck E. Cheese parody restaurant Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, where the player tracks the free-roaming animatronic robots as its night watchman. Through newspaper articles, messages from their shift supervisor (the "Phone Guy",) and minigames the player learns that in the restaurant's past a serial killer (who may have been an employee) murdered several children on its premises. The implication is that the animatronics, who are ostensibly trying to kill the player because of faulty programming, are in fact possessed by the vengeful spirits of the dead children.
- Five Nights at Freddy's 3 takes place 30 years after the first game, with the player as a night watchman for Fazbear's Fright, an upcoming horror-themed attraction based on the shuttered restaurant. While plenty of Fazbear paraphernalia has been recovered for the show, it is not until the second night that the managers discover a complete animatronic, Springtrap, who they introduce as an exhibit. The player is also given training tapes from Phone Guy explaining that Springtrap is a special animatronic who's exterior "suit" can be converted to be worn by a robotic endoskeleton or a person. The spring-lock mechanism holding back the suit's robotic parts is extremely sensitive, however, and when someone is killed when these parts accidentally deploy into their body the suits are sealed away in secret storage rooms and disavowed.
- After completing nights, the player enters minigames where they play as the old animatronics. They are lured to a remote room by the Purple Man, a figure used in FNaF2 's minigames to represent the killer, then violently dismantled. After the fifth night the Purple Man is confronted by the spirits of the dead children, and is killed when he tries hiding in the Springtrap suit.
- Normally upon completing night five and its minigame the player will be informed they have reached the "bad ending." To get the good ending the player must find additional secret minigames, then find secret exits in each one to deliver cake to the murdered children's spirits. Thus comforted, they depart the animatronics, and after the final Purple Man minigame they player is informed they've reached "the end." Upon completing the sixth "Nightmare" level the player is shown a newspaper article stating Fazbear's Fright, and most of the paraphernalia within, was destroyed in an electrical fire.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Lenin and McCarthy (talk • contribs) 03:42, March 8, 2015
Also, lore-source wise, is this any good? --Lenin and McCarthy | (Complain here) 01:09, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
Also, the company does not refer to Springtrap as Springtrap. The company doesn't refer to it at all, except for on the second night. Springtrap is the name that came from it being a trap composed of springs for the Purple Guy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Phierywhovian (talk • contribs) 05:12, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
Vandal Warning!
I have noticed vandalism recently. It is horrible. Five Nights fans have been doing it. They put"Animatronic Hallucanation" because of the story. It is not for FNAF fans.
Technically, that is not vandalism. It is describing the form the hallucination takes on, in this case, an animatronic. I have now changed the text to animatronic-like, so as not to confuse them with actual animatronics. Empoleonmaster23 (talk) 14:33, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

- Lead
- " in a horror-themed attraction based on the chain of restaurants" - condense to restaurant chains
- Done, though I made it just "chain".
- "the player must monitor the attractions security cameras" - missing apostrophe?
- Looks like someone else did this.
- "A third entry in the Five Nights at Freddy's series was first confirmed in January 2015" - perhaps revealed is a better word choice
- Done.
- "with praise towards the reworked mechanics and gameplay from previous entries" - redundant phrasing
- Fixed.
- "The fourth game in the series, Five Nights at Freddy's 4," - replace with Its successor
- Done.
- "alongside the first, second, and fourth game's in the series." - incorrect apostrophe, regardless I would consider replacing this with instalments
- Done.
- Body
- "... at a soon-to-open horror attraction" - link Haunted attraction (simulated)
- Done.
- "the player will be jumpscared and one of the systems will fail" - link jump scare for those unfortunate enough not to have fallen prey
- Done.
- "an opinion concurred Rowen and Vogel" - missing word
- Fixed.
- "The game's narrative and minigame's were also discussed" - discussed is a weak word; consider Critics were divided over the game's narrative and minigames
- Done.
Overall this is a decent, compact article with not much standing in its way. I'll leave it on hold for now.

- Hi, thanks for reviewing both this and Hotline Miami 2. I believe I have addressed all of the above concerns. NegativeMP1 15:11, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- No problem, I'm happy to promote this.

Sourcing and Media
@NegativeMP1 and Jaguar: Excuse me digging this one up -- see the discussion at WT:GAN. I don't see any signs above that a media or source review were done before promoting, and these are both prerequisites to promotion, so I'll do one below. UndercoverClassicist T·C 20:30, 5 August 2025 (UTC)
- For obvious reasons, the sources are entirely online video game journalism. Within that field, the chosen publications seem reliable enough to my non-expert eye (see e.g. RSN here on PCGamer]. Metacritic is, per this RSN discussion, cited appropriately for aggregations of reviews.
- Media -- two files, both copyrighted, both with appropriate fair-use rationales.
The Plot section is mostly uncited. This is not necessarily a problem, as per MOS:PLOTCITE and MOS:VGPLOT, plot summaries of a video game can be assumed to be cited to the work itself. However, the sentence animatronics from previous games are destroyed by an unnamed purple figure, who is a supposed serial killer previously seen in the minigames of Five Nights at Freddy's 2.
should be cited, as clearly this cannot be verified purely by playing Five Nights 3.
Spot checks:
- Note 1 (Five Nights at Freddy's 3 is a point-and-click survival horror game): checks out.
- Notes 3 and 4 (Unlike the two previous games, Five Nights at Freddy's 3 features only one animatronic capable of killing the player, that being a rabbit-like character known as "Springtrap", which wanders around the attraction and targets the player's office) -- checks out. Strictly, targets the player's office isn't stated in either source, but 3 talks about Springtrap ending up there, and 4 talks about it "stalking me", so I think that's a reasonable paraphrase.
- Notes 4 and 5 (Freddy Fazbear, Chica, Foxy (from the first game) and a few characters from the second game make appearances as "phantom" animatronics, though these are incapable of killing the player): this checks.
- Note 6 (After each night, the player can choose to play an Atari-style minigame. These minigames provide backstory for the series) -- checks. Likewise, from the same source, The game consists of five "nights" and an extra sixth night (the citations could have been bundled here).
- Notes 7 and 8 (In January 2015, less than three months after the release of Five Nights at Freddy's 2, an image was uploaded to Scott Cawthon's website teasing a third entry in the series. At the same time, an automated response system was setup on Cawthon's email, confirming Five Nights at Freddy's 3 to be in development and requesting fans to not ask questions on the game.): there is a small problem here. The first part checks fine from note 8, but "at the same time" does not -- note 7 has “Five Nights at Freddy's 3 is in production!,” Cawthon writes in the email generated for those who reach out, adding that any further questions about the sequel will not be read or answered. The sequel was first teased on Cawthon's official website where the phrase "I'm still here" is paired with an image of Fazbear. and is dated three days later, suggesting that the website image came first.
- Note 10: (A demo for the game was released to selected YouTubers on March 1, with the full game being released hours later on March 2.): this does not appear to check at all, unless it's from the embedded YouTube video (which I haven't watched in full) -- there, I would have a WP:UGC concern in any case.
- Note 6 (Nadia Oxford of Gamezebo believed the game to be easier than its predecessor: this does not check. The closest thing we have is, in the "pro" column,
Easier to keep track of events than in the previous game.
-- clearly, saying that one aspect is easier is not the same as saying that the game itself is easier. - Note 4 (Petitte wrote that the game was presented well and praised the horror aspect of Springtrap, but believed that the phantom animatronics lacked their original personalities and felt repetitious): this checks out.
Overall: there are some issues here. They are fairly minor and should be quick fixes, but (in particular) the uncited sentence in Plot and the minor WP:TSI concerns raised in spotcheck need to be addressed for the article to meet the Good Article criteria. Please do ping me if I've misunderstood or been unfair about anything. UndercoverClassicist T·C 20:30, 5 August 2025 (UTC)
