Talk:2024 United Kingdom riots

Widen scope?

With similar anti-migrant protests still happening outside hotels[1] and violent incidents dating back to 2023[2] might it be a good idea to include these events, widen the scope of this article and change the name to something like Anti-migrant riots in the UK? Personally , I think this page's remit is wide enough. That sounds like a good idea for a separate page that could link to this though. Lewishhh (talk) 11:48, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have to disagree. This article covers a clear series of riots which happened across the country over a specific amount of time. Whilst there have been anti-immigration riots and protests outside of this, there is no reason to include them in this article. Furthermore, although these riots could be seen as a flare up of a wider issue, that doesn't mean the rest of the issue should be put into this article. If a separate article were to be made that would be more suitable, and then this article would be more like a subtopic of the wider topic of anti-immigration riots in the UK. harrz talk 13:22, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think as the anti-illegal immigration protests continue, they'll most likely be served best by their own page when they get prominent enough.Halbared (talk) 21:08, 15 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Lucy Connolly minimum sentence?

"At a hearing held at Birmingham Crown Court on 17 October, Judge Melbourne Inman KC sentenced Connolly to 31 months in prison (the minimum allowed by sentencing guidelines, including a 25% discount for a guilty plea), with 40% (nominally 1 year and 12 days) to be served, the remainder on licence.[267]"

"267. Cunningham, Alice (17 October 2024). "Politician's wife Lucy Connolly jailed for race hate post". BBC News. BBC. Archived from the original on 24 November 2024. Retrieved 18 October 2024.

The BBC source does not say that the judge gave Lucy the minimum sentence within the guidelines, as far as I can see; this seems to be an editorial synthesis (WP:SYNTH) and/or is unverified (WP:V) and/or original research (WP:NOR). Rho9998 (talk) 12:08, 21 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is a good source which explains her sentence (and unsuccessful appeal against it). They use the term "starting point" which I'm not sure is equivalent to "minimum", so I don't know how best to reword it. Orange sticker (talk) 12:27, 21 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The starting point is for a given category/class. Various aggravating factors and mitigating factors can be taken into account, depending on the specific guidelines and normal judicial process. Also of course the discount for pleading guilty at an early stage (which might in turn be reduced if there is a Newton hearing).
The judge says the starting point' after a trial would be three years (section 12) but the minimum sentence after a trial would be three and a half years (section 24) - this has the mitigation and aggravation applied. I'll endeavour to expand and improve the explanation shortly. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 13:55, 23 August 2025 (UTC).[reply]
There should be a link to the judge's sentencing remarks, and another to the sentencing guidelines (If, as I think, it's Public Order act 1986 section 19). I'm not sure if these were removed or never added. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 13:23, 23 August 2025 (UTC).[reply]

Lucy Connolly article

I plan to create an article on Lucy Connolly, since she has become a cause célèbre. I intend to reduce the section here and move the current version to a new article. It will probably be today, unless someone else does it first.

Did you ever start a page for her? I can't see one but agree that she's notable enough now to have her own page. I don't want to start one if you've already got one in drafts? Tr21 (talk) 14:54, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No mention of the 'White Genocide' comment?

hopefully im not falling for some kind of far-right nonsense, but i've seen multiple sources mention Axel's support for an ethnic cleansing in Britain. As a possible motive it might be apt to at least mention that while the kid had a passion for massacres, there was a certain racial undertone to them which might have fueled the far-right stuff even more? lmk if this is fake Baguetteboing (talk) 12:29, 24 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You really need reliable sources to back up what you are saying here, this question appears to be more relevant to 2024 Southport stabbings where Axel Rudakubana is referenced. CNC (talk) 13:09, 24 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
