Lord Robert Manners was the second son of John Manners, 3rd Duke of Rutland and his wife Bridget Sutton. His mother who was heiress to the estates of her father Robert Sutton 2nd Baron Lexington of Aram (1662-1723) deid in 1734, and the Sutton estates passed first to Lord Robert and on his death in 1772 to his brother Lord George whose son Thomas was created Lord Manners of Foston in 1807. A version of this portrait descended in the Manners-Sutton family to Algernon Heber-Percy, until sold at Christie's, 17th November 1967, lot 72 (as of 'John, 3rd Duke of Rutland').
