The Twilight World is an upcoming adult animated war drama film directed by Werner Herzog (in his animated feature debut) from a screenplay written by Herzog, Michael Arias, and Luca Vitale. It is based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Herzog. It is expected to be released in 2028.
Premise
Based on the life of Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier, stationed in Lubang during World War II, who refused to surrender until 1974.
Production
In March 2025, it was announced that an animated adaptation of the 2021 novel The Twilight World by Werner Herzog was in development by Sun Creature Studio and Psyop, with Herzog, Michael Arias, and Luca Vitale writing the screenplay. Production is scheduled to commence in early 2026.[1][2]
