Bernard Guelton is a French researcher, artist and academic. He is Professor Emeritus at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon‑Sorbonne, where he has worked on fiction, media, and spatial cognition.[1] His career combines artistic practice with theoretical research, focusing on how fiction and immersion intersect with social, architectural, and urban contexts. After his research on fiction, he gradually shifted his focus to the scientific analysis of collective behavior in urban environments. He now entirely devotes himself to scientific research in spatial cognition.[2][3]
Career
In the late 1980s, Guelton started to develop artistic projects exploring the relationships between art and urban environments.[4] His projects include mobile works and urban games, often in collaboration with his research team Fictions & Interactions at Sorbonne Paris 1. This team examines fiction in artistic and visual practices, with an emphasis on intermediality, interactivity, and the blending of fiction and reality. After his research on fiction,[3] he shifted his focus to the scientific analysis of collective behavior in urban environments. The team’s international research projects include:[5]
- Creation and Immersion in Fictional and Virtual Devices (2011–2013) France, Canada, China.[6]
- Espaços Outros”, Virtual and Fictional Territories (2012-2014) France, Brazil.
- Digital Interfaces in Situations of Mobility: Cognitive, Artistic, and Game Devices (2013–2017)[7]
- Situated Media & Shared Mobilities (2017–2019) France, Canada
- Behaviors and Collective Spatial Representations in Urban Areas (2019–2025). Funded by ANR (French National Research Agency).
