Drew Cain (born 19 June 1971) is a Scottish actor,[1] known for his portrayal of James Herriot Senior in Channel 5 drama All Creatures Great and Small, and Alistair Banks in the Channel 4 soap opera, Hollyoaks.
Early life and Education
Though Cain is from Glasgow, Scotland he spent his childhood in West Africa and Saudi Arabia.[2] Upon returning to Scotland, he finished his high school education in Glasgow. He went on to attend Glasgow Caledonian University, from which he graduated with a BA Hons in Communication and Mass Media in in 1997. Whilst attending university, Cain received his first acting credit in Lynne Ramsey's short film, Kill the Day.[3] Following this, he attended Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, graduating in 2002.[2]
Career
For a number of years in the late 1990s, Cain worked in the film and television industry as an assistant director. Following his graduation from Mountview, he transitioned from working behind the camera to in front of it.
Hollyoaks
Cain first appeared on Hollyoaks as D.S. Banks in August 2013 and sporadically appeared as a recurring character throughout the next decade. His character, now D.I. Alistair Banks was announced as a regular cast member in January 2025.[4]
All Creatures Great and Small
James Herriot Senior, Cain's character in All Creatures Great and Small, first appeared in the series' pilot episode You've Got to Dream.[5] Cain has appeared intermittently since, most recently featuring in season 5.[6]

Personal Life
He has been married to Catherine Cain since July 1997. They have two daughters.[8]
