Although Wikipedia is one of the most popular encyclopedias in the world, women are highly underrepresented on its pages. In this Massachusetts Institute of Technology IAP workshop, participants will create original Wikipedia articles about notable women in history. Emphasis will be placed on women in the STEM disciplines, but attendees may chose women from any field. Participants will learn the nuances required of successful Wikipedia biographies; discover how to add appropriate images to Wikipedia articles; research notable women missing from Wikipedia's pages using multimedia resources from MIT's libraries; and come away having created at least one viable new article. No Wikipedia editing experience required.
Participants: This multi-day workshop is open to all members of the MIT community, but space is limited to a maximum of 16 attendees. As such, registration is required (details below). No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary, however, participants should make themselves familiar with basic Wikipedia markup language (see the markup language cheat sheet for a tutorial). Registrants should plan to attend all four sessions.
The following is a sampling of suggested articles to create or add upon. However, feel free to come up with your own ideas! There is an extensive list of article suggestions on the WikiWomen's History Month missing articles page.
