Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. - A request for comment is open to discuss whether admins should be advised to warn users rather than issue no-warning blocks to those who have posted promotional content outside of article space.
- The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
- Following the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been elected to the Arbitration Committee: CaptainEek, Daniel, Elli, KrakatoaKatie, Liz, Primefac, ScottishFinnishRadish, Theleekycauldron, Worm That Turned.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in January 2025 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!

File:Einsmann.jpg
Hi Kusma. Given the likely date File:Einsmann.jpg was taken, there's a good chance it's already within the public domain per c:COM:Germany even though the source website is claiming it's copyrighted. It seems fine licensed as non-free, but you might want to ask about it at c:COM:VPC to see whether it's OK to relicense and OK for Commons to host. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:40, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly, if it was "published" in 1931 or 1932 it is indeed anonymous it is PD in Germany, but per c:Commons:Hirtle chart I am not sure it is PD in the United States (it may have not been PD in Germany in 1996). There are various definitely published anonymous photographs of the person in 1931/32 newspapers, but again, these seem to be PD in Germany but not in the US. —Kusma (talk) 08:48, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- Please understand I wasn't stating the uploading the file as non-free was wrong; just mentioning the possibility of the image being within the public domain. If the photo was published in 1931/1932, it could enter into the public domain as early as January 1, 1927, even with URAA renewal, under US copyrght law, right? If that's the case, you could add
{{Non-free in US}}
or{{Not-PD-US-URAA}}
to the file's page to make that known. I believe dojgn so adds the file to a category of similar files, and other work of that category to review files after the date they're expected to become PD in the US. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:00, 20 January 2025 (UTC)- I believe now that some of the newspaper photographs will be PD on 2027-01-01, but I don't have enough information (yet) about the one I uploaded to be sure, especially I don't know whether it was indeed anonymous. I'd be happy to prove the file free but I don't think we're there yet. Thank you for making me think about it! —Kusma (talk) 06:58, 20 January 2025 (UTC)

Regarding deletion of Atul Subhash
Hi! I created the article in good faith intending to write it in the evening. The first draft might have passed the criteria for G10, I shall not argue on that, however bonafide my intentions. Regardless, I just wanted to, as a courtesy, inform you that I will be recreating it soon, as the subject is notable and warrants a good faith article. LΞVIXIUS💬 14:45, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Levixius, for anything related to accusing people of crimes or other wrongdoing, you need to be extremely careful with WP:BLP compliance. —Kusma (talk) 22:03, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- Noted, thanks! LΞVIXIUS💬 11:05, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
Request to restore Penaldo
Please I would like to solicit you to undo the deletion of Penaldo. The article was nominated for and subsequently deleted after a bot left a tag on the page labeling it an 'attack page'. I made sure the article had no form of attack on its subject(s) and that it's fit to be on Wikipedia. I request that you please undo the deletion as you are the deleting administrator. You may wish to make any ammendments to it once you restore it. Thank You! elias_fdafs • (Let's Talk! What Have I Done?) 07:32, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
- I deleted the page because it was purely negative about a WP:BLP, a WP:POVFORK of Cristiano Ronaldo for a nickname that doesn't even appear in his article (or even in Messi–Ronaldo rivalry). I added "hoax" to the deletion reasons because the references were not by the claimed author and mostly not working. This is not how we do BLP content. —Kusma (talk) 10:43, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
Request for help with editor conduct
Hey! I could use your help with / advice on the vandalism case at Roman Miroshnichenko.
Here’s the diff between the last two versions: Diff link.
Although the page was protected, it was still edited yesterday by @Duffbeerforme, who left the following comment: "revert blocked editor who is restoring badly sourced promotional content."
This vandalism has been ongoing very actively for almost two months now, and overall lasts since October 2023 (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Roman Miroshnichenko).
Could you advise me on what I can do to properly investigate this issue?
I initiated a discussion almost a week ago at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Non-autoconfirmed posts, but there hasn’t been any progress. Casesolved (talk) 17:39, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- Removing promotional or poorly sourced content is not vandalism. You have been given advice and have ignored it. —Kusma (talk) 17:49, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- Okay. That's a position. So, but the page was twice nominated for the deletion in its former state. Both times there was no consensus on the issue.
- So, is it how Wikipedia works, then? Someone can just make edits as they want without the right for a broader discussion? Casesolved (talk) 17:58, 25 January 2025 (UTC)

January music
Happy new year 2025, opened with trumpet fanfares that first sounded OTD in 1725 (as the Main page has). Near the end of the month, I have vacation pics to offer and the story of Werner Bardenhewer. I took the pic, and it was my DYK on his 90th birthday, in both English and German. He spent the day in Africa, and after his return said - chatting after a mass of thanks he celebrated at Mariä Heimsuchung - that we'd have to talk about these articles. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:42, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

DYK for Maria Einsmann
On 11 February 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Maria Einsmann, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Maria Einsmann claimed to be her own husband, Josef, when she registered the births of her companion Helene Müller's two children in 1921 and 1930? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Maria Einsmann. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Maria Einsmann), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Swallow
Hi, I'm looking to tidy up HMS Swallow (1745) with the idea of taking it for an A-class review. Regarding the exploration section, are there any particular sources you think I should be including that I haven't? Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 20:05, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
- @Pickersgill-Cunliffe, excellent idea. I think you have most of the sources I know of already. You could check out Edwards (search for "Swallow") but I think he just picks a few nice bits from Helen Wallis [1] [2] (you know there are two volumes? if there's anything you can't access, let me know and I can send scans). On my hard drive I found that Carteret lost 31 out of 90 men (cited to Helen Wallis). I'll look through my Pacific bookshelf tomorrow morning to see if there is anything else. (And I should really flesh out the content section of An Account of the Voyages one of these days). —Kusma (talk) 21:41, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
- I don't think I have much in terms of other book sources to add. Dunmore's edition of Bougainville's journals [3] might be a better source for the meeting with Bougainville, but doesn't have much extra unless the story of Bougainville finding a message from Carteret before meeting him isn't anywhere else. Again, let me know if you need scans. —Kusma (talk) 09:26, 14 February 2025 (UTC)

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter
The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.
Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1,168 round points, mainly from 4 featured articles and 4 good articles on old military history, in addition to an assortment of GA and FA reviews.
Generalissima (submissions) with 1,095 round points, mainly from 2 FAs, 2 featured lists, 8 GAs, and 16 Did You Know articles mainly on historical topics.
BeanieFan11 (submissions), with 866 round points from 20 GAs, 23 DYKs, and 2 In the News articles primarily about athletes.
Sammi Brie (submissions), with 846 round points from 16 GAs about radio and TV stations, 45 GA reviews, and 3 DYKs.
Hey man im josh (submissions), with 816 round points from 5 FLs about sports and Olympic topics, 46 FL reviews, 3 ITN articles, and a large number of bonus points.
MaranoFan (submissions), with 815 round points primarily from 3 FAs and 1 GA about music, in addition to 9 article reviews.
The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck!
