St. Alipius Primary School is a Roman Catholic day school for grades K-6 in Ballarat, Victoria. St. Alipius is widely regarded as the oldest Catholic Primary School in Ballarat.
It was founded in 1853[1] by Fr. Matthew Downing in a large Tent Chapel which was used as a Church on Sundays. In 1855, the tent was replaced by a weatherboard structure[2]. In 1873, the foundation stone of the Church's remaining bluestone structure was placed. In 1881, the school moved to the present site in a one-story building with a gallery.
The school was under the care of Mother Xavier Flood, and the first roll in 1883 showed the names of 200 students. By 1911, a second story was added to the building. In the following years, properties to the left and eight of the school were acquired in order to provide more space for the growing student population.
In 1959, the first government-funded school building was completed which altered the facility. The student population stood at 500.
The boy's and girl's schools operated independently until 1976, when the boy's school was closed and the girl's campus became coeducational. In the years following 2000, the school has undergone significant alterations and improvements.
