Online, I go by the name Alhadis (/ælh.dəs/ al-HAY-dəs). In the real world, people call me John.

My username is a reference to an old D&D character of mine, a street mage named Alhadis Di'Rayos. I chose it because the first online community I joined was the Wizards of the Coast forum in July 2002,[1] specifically its D&D[2] and world-building[3] boards. I've used this handle on every website I've joined ever since.

Like every other name I devised for my high-school D&D sessions, the name "Alhadis" was assembled from random syllables I juggled mentally, often extemporaneously. It coincides with certain transliterations of حديث (al-Hadith, lit.'the word'), which is why googling my username yields numerous results related to Islam or the Arabic-speaking world, despite my handle having no connection to either.

That's the extent of my social media presence.

Notes

  1. ^ Last measured on 28 November 2024.
  2. ^ Formally-evaluated c. 2001 during high school.
  3. ^ I was put up a grade during the move between schools, finishing 1994 at a Grade 2 level instead of Grade 1. Hence the ostensibly “missing” school year in the dates listed here.
