Clinically it can refer to:

• Bone fracture or 'periprosthetic fracture'^[1] around an artificial joint, e.g. after a knee replacement
• infection around an artificial joint or 'periprosthetic joint infection' ^[2]
• Vegetation or leak around an artificial heart valve
