Novomind AG (stylized as novomind) is a German-based software company that works in customer service, e-commerce, and digital communications. It was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Hamburg.[1] Novomind offers SaaS software[4] for shop systems, product information management (PIM) and customer service.[5][6][7][8]

The company's management board consists of five members,[2] including Stefan Grieben as CEO since January 1, 2022.[6] Novomind is an Aktiengesellschaft and therefore owned by its shareholders.[7] Founder Peter Samuelsen, who has since died, was the majority shareholder of the company until 2022.[6]

As of 2023, the company had around 600 employees, of which approximately 450 were based at the headquarters in Hamburg, with home office options. International branches are located in Dubai and Singapore.[7] In 2020, Deutsche Welle featured Novomind as an example in an article on flat corporate hierarchies.[9]

History

In 1999, Peter Samuelsen, an employee of a management consultancy, was commissioned to create an avatar, an early form of an online assistant, for a website. After completing the project, Samuelsen founded the company Novomind to develop similar applications.[1] Initially, the company created figures and avatars to guide website users,[10] then developed chatbots for online sales and expanded to customer service in social networks. With its work on chatbots in the late 1990s, it is considered one of the earliest AI development companies in Germany.[6] The company officially commenced operations in early 2000.[11][10]

By 2014, Novomind had around 180 employees and a revenue of 18 million.[12] As a result of the growing workforce, the company moved to a new building on Bramfelder Chaussee in Hamburg in 2015.[13]

In the 2022 financial year, Novomind achieved sales growth of 19% and exceeded the €50 million mark for the first time with sales of over €58 million.[14] Also in 2022, company founder Samuelsen retired from the company's management. He was succeeded by computer scientist Stefan Grieben, who had been working for the company since its foundation. Samuelsen remained the majority shareholder of the company[6] until his death in 2023.[15]

Products

Novomind works in the areas of digital commerce and customer service with SaaS software. Among other products, Novomind offers a shop system whose modules can be customized as required[16] and a PIM system that manages and organizes product information. This facilitates the maintenance and updating of product data. The system is suitable for B2C and B2B.[17] Novomind is also working on automation in customer service, such as chatbots[6] or mailbots.[18] Clients as of 2022 include, e.g., Volkswagen, the Otto Group, C&A,[6] the clothing brand Falke[19] and the construction and home improvement retail chain Hagebau.[20]

Awards

In 2013, Novomind was awarded the "Entrepreneur of the Year" award in the IT and media category, which is presented annually by Ernst & Young to medium-sized companies.[21][22]
