The painting shows preparation being made (some time in the early 19th century) for a sati ceremony, in which the newly widowed wife (shown in a white sari by the water) of a deceased Hindu upper caste man is to sit (by her own volition or by virtue of being forced by others) atop his funeral pyre and to immolate herself. |
