Deutsch: Der U-Bahnhof Smith/9. Straße der IND Culver Line befindet sich auf dieser Brücke über dem Gowanus-Kanal. Sie ist so hoch gebaut, damit Schiffe darunter hindurchfahren können.
Obwohl die nächstgelegenen Bahnhöfe (fast) unterirdisch liegen und die Rampen einen sehr steilen Eindruck machen, ist der zu überwindende Höhenunterschied recht gering. Ein Tunnel unter dem Kanal hätte nicht nur mehr Aufwand, sondern auch eine stärkere Steigung bedeutet.
English: The Smith/Ninth Street station at the IND Culver Line is on top of this bridge over the Gowanus Canal. The bridge is so high that it does not need to open to let ships pass, though the 9th Street bridge below must.
Although the next station in both directions lead to (almost-)underground stations and the ramps on both sides look rather steep, the slope is quite gentle. Digging a tunnel beneath the canal would have meant higher costs and a steeper incline on both sides.

The bridge crosses Gowanus Canal. On top is the Smith-9th Street IND subway station, and on bottom is the 9th Street roadway, used by cars and B75 bus.
