Mershops Shops at Montebello (formerly The Shops at Montebello and Montebello Town Center) is a shopping mall mainly located within the city limits of Montebello, California, with over 120 national and local retail outlets such as Aéropostale, Hollister, Victoria's Secret and BJ's Restaurant & Brewery.[1] A small portion of its eastern side is actually within the city limits of Rosemead. It features major department stores, children's stores, smaller shops such as beauty and bath stores, health stores and salons,[2] as well as a small food court. The boundary line between Montebello and Rosemead runs through the eastern end of the mall. Policing is provided by the City of Montebello. It was managed by The Macerich Company before being sold to Simon Property Group in 2011. The mall features 758,504 sq ft of leasable retail space.[citation needed] Pacific Retail announced ownership of the mall on the company Instagram page on January 24, 2019.[3] As of now, the mall is currently owned by Mershops and managed by Spinoso Real Estate Group.[citation needed]
Construction of the mall began in 1980 and was completed in 1985 by Donahue-Schriber.[4] The mall opened for business for the 1985 holiday season. The Mall was featured in the 2002 comedy The Hot Chick. A comprehensive remodel was expected to begin in 2009, in time for the winter holidays. The Malls name changed from Montebello Town Center to The Shops at Montebello as part of the 2010 renovations. The remainder of the renovation was expected to be completed in June 2010 and includes a center court with more "high end" stores such as Coach fine leathers and Aldo fashion footwear.[1] The mall was again remodeled in 2016. The food court was renovated along with enhanced entryways, landscaping, signage, and outdoor seating.[5] The anchor store H&M was also remodeled.[6]
The mall's original anchors were JCPenney, Mervyn's and May Company California.[7] May Company became Robinsons-May in 1993. Macy's built a new store and opened as a fourth anchor in 2001. The Robinsons-May store became a Macy's in 2006, with the former Macy's building becoming a Macy's Home store. Mervyn's went out of business in 2008 and became a Forever 21 in 2009.[8]
In May 2022, The Shops at Montebello was sold to Bridge Group Investments for more than $90 million.[9] In August 2025, The Shops at Montebello was rebranded as Mershops Shops at Montebello, because of Bridge Group Investments rebrand as Mershops, which was a portfolio wide change across all of their properties.[10]
In 2025, Forever 21 closed following their Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.[11] However, the former Forever 21 will be subdivided into 4 different spaces, a Yard House, potential retail space, and potential restaurant space on the lower floor, and a Round 1 on the upper floor, both Yard House and Round 1 are supposed to have the opening date of 2025 / 2026.[12]
