English: The coefficient of drag Cd for a magnetic sail operating in the radial orientation quantifies the applicability of the MHD model, namely that characteristic length L must be greater than the ion gyroradius rg to effectively transfer solar wind momentum to the spacecraft. The ratio rg/L defines this test such that when less than one momentum is effectively transferred, but at values greater than one the transfer is greatly reduced according to a percentage lost Thrust Tloss. |
