Maria Walsh is an author and historian who was born in Waterford City but has spent most of her life living in Dunmore East, Co. Waterford. Her books include Waterford 914, Waterford's Secret Millionaires and Dunmore East a Living History.

Biography

Maria was educated in Waterford and at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She qualified as a drama teacher and ran a drama school in Tramore, Waterford and Kilkenny for many years. During those years she wrote plays and stories for her classes. When she decided to take up writing for publication she concentrated on the local environs.

As Waterford’s oldest city was founded in 914 by the Vikings.[1][2], she created a novel called Waterford - 914 which is held by the American Library of Congress.[3] This tells the story of how the Vikings became ‘more Irish than the Irish themselves.’ One thousand copies of the book were purchased by Waterford Crystal and given as a gift with purchase of their limited-edition 1,000 commemorative bowls produced to celebrate the City of Waterford’s 1,000 year history[4]

Other books published by the author include Dunmore East – a living history, An Anthology of Waterford People and Ireland’s Secret Millionaires – from Waterford.[5] The latter publication charts the history of the Malcomson family from Tipperary and Waterford who were among the wealthiest people in Europe during the Napoleonic and Victorian eras. Her publications are also in the British Library. Currently she has returned to fiction writing.
