Talk:Bilbo Baggins

Burglar

What is the issue with calling him a burglar? Sarah from Queens (talk) 16:41, 17 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

He's completely atypical, not remotely burglarious: it's a jokey appellation by Tolkien (a man full of jokes). It's true that BB went off on an adventure, but killing a dragon and recovering the dragon's stolen hoard is not burglary in any ordinary sense; he's called a burglar to contrast him formally with the bourgeois Sackville-Bagginses, where the meaning could be he's eccentric, off-beam, solitary, rich, asocial, adventurous, etc. Burglars make a living by breaking into houses and selling what they've stolen: not at all Bilbo's style. If you look at the other members of the category, you'll find he fits like a mattress on a bottle of wine. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:09, 17 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Asocial? But he is part of a traveling group, and he does not seem to seek seclusion. In comparison to the typically solitary Byronic hero (who is frequently a social outcast), Bilbo seems quite gregarious. Dimadick (talk) 23:57, 18 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That he's not one. The whole point is that Thorin and company are asking things of him that are in fact far outside his skill set. —VeryRarelyStable 01:20, 19 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
