I feel that it is slightly misleading to open by stating that the first paper with non-Hermitian quantum mechanics in the title is that of Hatano and Nelson, given that papers with similar verbiage in their titles were written in prior years. For instance: -Non-Hermitian evolution of two-level quantum systems (1990) doi:10.1103/PhysRevA.42.1467 -Quasi-Hermitian operators in quantum mechanics and the variational principle (1992) doi:10.1016/0003-4916(92)90284-S
