IPA transcription
The IPA transcription in this article seems off, as I've never heard it pronounced like [jiː], only [jeː]. Can anyone confirm this pronunciation?
Orcaguy (talk) 20:13, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- As of recently, the text cited Bjarne Berulfsen's Norsk uttaleordbok, which is a well-known and respected resource, albeit a bit old. I agree with you, and have taken the liberty of updating the pronunciation. Unfortunately I don't have any good secondary or tertiary sources besides Store Norske Leksikon. Some primary sources below, which I hope are not geoblocked:
- Svalbard 1974 timestamps 00:03 and 00:12
- Abels tårn fra Huset, Longyearbyen (timestamp 00:24)

Map glitch

The infobox map seems to be glitching and showing Longyearbyen in the wrong place. It also seems to change location based on which map you show/hide. Is that happening for anyone else? Relinus (talk) 21:27, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- You're right. It looks like an issue with the SVG. Also, the standard map template in the infobox is dumb because Longyearbyen doesn't even show up until you zoom all the way out to Earth, since it's not within Norway's (or even Europe's) bounding box. Orange Suede Sofa (talk) 21:49, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- I fixed the standard map issue by only including Earth view, as the other two are pointless. There may be another view supported by the template and I'll take a look later. I've also noticed that there are two different coords given in the infobox so that should be resolved as well. Orange Suede Sofa (talk) 22:01, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- And finally, I found that there is an Arctic view for infobox maps, so I added that as default and left Earth as an option, which is I believe as good as that will get unless the the template supports a better bounding box, which I have not been able to find. Orange Suede Sofa (talk) 22:16, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- I see, thanks for figuring that out! Relinus (talk) 23:13, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Citation error bleeding into sentence and missing words under Culture
The sentence below in the Culture section has the citation link in the text, and it seems some words are replaced. "...regularly meet in the Svalbar? ?? on match days..."

GAR needed template query
@Tbhotch: You added the "GAR request" template to this article in March with this edit. Do you still think this article needs a GAR? If so, would you like to open it? Z1720 (talk) 20:01, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
- I add the tag as a notification that the page does not, in my view, meet the GA criteria, and the main authors (or anyone) should work on it. The visible issues from then (update, cn, unsourced paragraphs) are still there. I rarely open GARs. (CC) Tbhotch™ 20:27, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Tbhotch: I'll open a GAR then for additional exposure. Z1720 (talk) 21:01, 14 September 2025 (UTC)

Not Yet- I'm not convinced that several of the sources in the article are actually RS. icepeople.net (used multiple times), johnnyjet.com, a substack page. This doesn't appear to be an overly pervasive issue, but given that this is the sort of article that tends to accumulate crufty stuff, I'd rather see this looked at a bit closer as regards existing content. Hog Farm Talk 18:23, 25 September 2025 (UTC)- @Hog Farm:: I added better sources for Longyearbyen laws (instead of johnnyjet.com) and look for more cases of dubious sourcing. Regarding the other two sources you mentioned, I think I can justify substack page, because it's written by Joel Rabinowitz who made contributions to The Guardian, The Liverpool Echo and These Football Times. What would you say are the red flags of "icepeople.net"? It is powered by WordPress, but the article has an RS saying it's a local Longyearbyen newspaper, so it's not a blog. The only issue I see the two articles I checked don't have bylines. —LastJabberwocky (Rrarr) 18:55, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! Sounds like Rabinowitz is OK then, and if the WordPress powered-thing is a local newspaper, then I'm okay with this. Keep as well from me. Hog Farm Talk 19:03, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
