2023 Egyptian presidential election2024 Egyptian presidential election2024 Egyptian presidential election – The official and legally recognized designation by Egypt’s National Election Authority is "2024 Egyptian presidential election". Although the vote physically took place in December 2023, the official title corresponds to the constitutional six-year electoral cycle (2018 → 2024 → 2030), not merely the calendar year of the vote. Using the official 2024 designation ensures consistency with the presidential term, prevents confusion for readers regarding the length of the term, and respects the legal and formal authority of the National Election Authority.

There are numerous international precedents where events retained their official names despite occurring in a different year:

  • Africa Cup of Nations 2021 — held in 2022
  • UEFA Euro 2020 — held in 2021
  • Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games — held in 2021
  • FIFA Club World Cup 2020 — held in 2021
  • Copa América 2020 — held in 2021
  • AFC Asian Cup 2023 — held in 2024
  • Africa Cup of Nations 2023 — held in 2024

These examples demonstrate that keeping the official name is standard practice internationally, especially when it is legally recognized and tied to a fixed cycle. Retaining "2024 Egyptian presidential election" reflects the official designation, maintains chronological consistency, and provides clarity for readers. This approach balances Wikipedia’s naming conventions with factual accuracy and official recognition. • Oppose as misleading and incorrect – The election was held in 2023. Election articles are titled according to the formula set out at WP:NCELECT, not 'officially designated' titles by national election commissions. All the abovementioned examples are sports tournaments with official names and irrelevant to this discussion. Contrary to the claim made above, renaming this would do the very opposite of "prevent[ing] confusion for readers". Number 57 13:15, 31 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Bro, we already had a discussion, let someone else listen to me. Aelrhman2007 (talk) 22:47, 31 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. I understand the nom's rationale, but so far it is based on a wrong premise. First and foremost, all of the aforementioned examples refer to sports events (which typically have seasons longer than elections). Then, all of them seem to be postponements (not advancements), with reliable sources keeping using the original years (which means these do comply with WP:COMMONNAME). Barring extraordinary situations such as these, events are typically referred under the date they took place (see WP:NCE and WP:NCELECT). I cannot think of any example of an election article in Wikipedia which is not titled under the year the election happened, so doing it differently here would also be a breach of WP:CONSISTENT and would confuse readers as to when the election did actually happen. As an additional note on the examples provided by the nom, note how these do not exactly adhere to naming conventions on events (precisely because of them being sports tournaments), with the year being located at the end of the title (thus being part of an official name, frequently used for branding or marketing purposes) and not at the beginning (which would denote when the event took place).
